CHARLES DOBIE : LOCAL HISTORY TORONTO, ONTARIO Photos by Charles Dobie
Anti-War Measures Act Demonstration October 17, 1970
For about two years, starting in June 1970, I was a photographer for
Guerilla, a counter-cultural and anti-establishment bi-weekly newspaper. I was also working nights as a
printer at the Toronto Star (my real job) and I suspect that the first roll of negatives
(photos 1 through 31) were developed by
the Star, just because of their smooth-as-silk appearance. I know that none were published in the Star,
but one or two may have appeared in Guerilla.
Clayton Ruby seems to have been the main speaker, and Greg King who appears in several
of the photos, was an articling student at the law firm of Copeland and Ruby. There
were other speakers as the last few photos show, but their faces are hidden by the megaphone.
But if you
view Al Darlington's set of photos of this demo,
you will see several others who I missed after I ran out of film. If you can identify
anyone, either speakers or members of the crowd,

This is the start of the second roll of film. I had two cameras and this one had a
telephoto lens. The photos are in the order they were taken so the time-line here has jumped back to before the
speeches started, about the same as Photo 4 or 5 above.
