She married Arthur Nathaniel SELF in Thomaston, Upson County, Ga., 10 AUG 1904 in old McCoy House, a two-story former plantation home in which his parents and grandparents had lived after the war. The house, also where Milford and Evelyn were born, was rumored to be haunted. Evelyn and Dot told me of one incident concerning a "drummer" or traveling salesman, and lights flickering in the second-floor hallway all night which led him to believe a family member was sick. In reality, no one had been up at all.

He gave half his produce, from one section of the farm, to the "Big Man." He ran a large commercial cane syrup mill at another time, and finally moved his family to East Thomaston where he and his daughters eventually went to work at Thomaston Mills. Evelyn Self Nelson said he quit farming to work in the mill because of a disability. Finding it not to his liking, he moved the family back to the country for two years. Eventually, they returned to town to take jobs in the mill. Whit stayed in the country and did as much farming as he could, for a while living with his brother Len, who owned a general store.
