Descendants of Allen Helms: Second Generation 4. Milus2 HELMS sr (Allen1) was born in North Carolina 1818, possibly as late as 1820. Milus died after 1880.

He married Cordelia Frances BROWN Helms in Talbot County, Ga., 8 OCT 1843. Delia was born in Talbot County, Ga. about 1825. Delia died before 2 MAY 1895 in Atlanta, Fulton County, Ga..(3) According to the obituary, "her remains were taken to her old home, Waverly Hall, yesterday..." Her body was interred 3 MAY 1895 in Waverly Hall, Harris County, Ga.. She was buried on the day her obituary was published.

Milus resided in Georgia after 1840. Not on the 1840 Georgia census index.

Milus was the head of a family on the 1850 Census in Tablot County, Ga.

He was not found in the 1860 index.

Milus Helmes was the head of a family on the 1870 Census in Harris County, Ga. Milus Helmes, 50, b. N.C., Hamilton, Harris(on) County, M593, roll 148, p. 61.

Miles Helmns was the head of a family on the 1880 Census in Waverly Hall, Harris County, Ga. Miles and Cordelia Helmns lived in Waverly Hall Dist. 934 of Harris County. Their household included Eliza A., 19; grandson Leander Helmns, 5; and boarder Alonzo Baine, 21, b. 1859 in Alabama. Harris County Vol. 12, ED 60, Sheet 34, Line 30.

A possible other son is Leandery Helmns, b. 1848. In 1880 he and his wife Laura, 37, b. 1843 in Ga., and children George, 9, Amanda, 7, and boarder Henry Whitton, 21, lived in Waverly Hall along with the rest of the Helmns. Sheet 33, Line 35 of the same census.

The 1861-65 gap in children could suggest Milus served in the Civil War.

The 1920 census lists Matthews Helms' father as having been born in South Carolina.

Milus HELMS sr and Cordelia Frances BROWN Helms had the following children:

child 18 ii. Lumun HELMS was born in Talbot County, Ga. about 1845. Lumun reportedly never married.

child + 19 iii. William A. HELMS was born 16 MAR 1846.

child + 20 iv. John M. HELMS was born 1850.

child + 21 v. Richard HELMS was born 1851.

child 22 vi. James HELMS was born in Georgia about 1853 or 1854. James may have moved to Texas.

child 23 vii. Charles HELMS was born in Georgia about 1855. Charles may have moved to Griffin; see notes from A History of Griffin for possible descendants.

child 24 viii. Anna Laura HELMS was born in Georgia about 1860.

child 25 ix. Eliza A. HELMS was born in Georgia about 1861.

child 26 x. Franklin HELMS was born in Georgia 1861 to 1863. He resided in The Rock, Upson County, Ga. 1920. Could be the ancestor of Luther Helms, who was in a play at The Rock school in 1948.

child 27 xi. Cora HELMS was born in Georgia about 1866. Cora may have moved to Griffin.

child 28 xii. Milus HELMS jr was born in Georgia about 1868. He married Minnie PARKS Helms in Upson County, Ga., 14 NOV 1891. Milus jr resided in Atlanta, Fulton County, Ga. 3 MAY 1895. His mother Delia died "at the residence of her son Milas in this city Sunday night..." according to the May 3, 1895 Griffin Weekly News and Sun.

Milus was known as "Stiffleg Milus" because he was wounded in the kneecap with an ax.
