Descendants of John Self: Fourth Generation 70. Sarah Elizabeth4 SELF JACKSON (John3, Isaac2, John1) was born in Upson County, Ga. 1 JUN 1865. Lizeth died 10 DEC 1895 in Ink, Polk County, Ark., at 30 years of age. She preceded her father in death by 10 days, and at her burial her husband and five surviving children vacated the home and moved in with Daniel's father. Sarah may have died of typhoid, though in a letter to Melissa Jordan, Ida Hartwig gave the cause of death as pneumonia. Her body was interred 12 DEC 1895 in Polk County, Ark., Concord Cemetery. Tombstone purchased by her children Samuel and Margaret in 1938 shows a birthdate of Sept. 1, 1865 and death date of Dec. 10, 1895. A homestead affidavit signed by her widower Daniel gives her death date as Dec. 12, assumed to be the date of burial.

She married Daniel Washington JACKSON in Mena, Polk County, Ark., 12 OCT 1884. License issued Oct. 10, 1884 upon payment of "the penal sum" of $100 toward the Common School Fund of Polk County. Daniel's age was given as 24 and Sarah's as 19. Marriage performed by G.C. Smith, ordinary; record filed June 7, 1887.

Daniel was born in Polk County, Ark. 5 DEC 1859. He was the son of Andrew J. JACKSON and Margaret FRIED Jackson. Daniel died 26 MAY 1943 near Maud, Okla., at the home of his son J.A. Jackson, who lived west of Maud, at the age of 83 years, 5 months and 21 days. His body was interred after 26 MAY 1943 in Ink, Polk County, Okla., Concord Cemetery with both his wives.

He resided in Dallas, Polk County, Ark. 1 NOV 1888. Daniel testified that on this date he took possession of 160 acres of homestead land, living in a log cabin with several outbuildings, an orchard and other improvements valued at $200.

He applied for homestead land in Dallas, Polk County, Ark., 8 MAR 1890. An affidavit dated Sept. 26, 1896 indicates Daniel began residing on his homestead with his late wife on Nov. 1, 1888. It was witnessed by William C. and Isaac L. Reed. He filed application 15020 at the Camden land office on March 28, 1890. He also testified that the family lived there continuously until Dec. 12, 1895, when Sarah died. He and his five children moved to his father's home, though he continued to cultivate the farm. His homestead was given a final decree on Jan. 21, 1897 after being approved on Dec. 28, 1896.

Washington Jackson was the head of a family on the 1900 Census in Quachita, Polk County, Ark. Washington Jackson, b. Dec. 1859, 40, b. AR, father b. NC, mother b. IL Ellen (Bates), wife, Sept. 1875, 24, b. AR, parents b. GA John, son, b. Sept. 1885, 14, all children and parents b. AR William, son, Jul 1887, 12; Samuel, b. Aug 1889, 10; Ellen, b. Nov. 1890, 9.

He resided in Seminole County, Wewoka, Wolftown, Okla. 1917. His second wife was Nancy Ellen Bates.

Sarah Elizabeth SELF Jackson and Daniel Washington JACKSON had the following children:

child 141 v. Henry C. JACKSON was born in Quito, Polk County, Ark. 6 NOV 1892. Henry died before 12 DEC 1895 in Quito, Polk County, Ark. Henry was not listed among his father's five children taken to Daniel's father after their mother's burial on Dec. 12, 1895. He may have died of typhoid.

child 142 vi. Daniel JACKSON was born in Mena, Polk County, Ark. 25 AUG 1894. Daniel died 1 OCT 1894 in Mena, Polk County, Ark., at less than one year of age.
