He married Mary Jane BRITT Self in Upson County, Ga., 5 JUN 1849. Eustace Reeves, JP, performed the ceremony.

Mary was born in Georgia JAN 1837, possibly as early as 1834 (Merkin). Mary died 31 JUL 1911 in Upson County, Ga., per estate records.

On the 1900 Census in Upson County, Ga., Mary was a widow living with Sarah and James Earles. Her parents were born in North Carolina and she was uneducated. Her occupation was given as farmer.

Mary's estate was probated in Upson County, Ga., 6 OCT 1913.

Jackson Self was tried in criminal court in Upson County, Ga., APR 1850. The grand jury issued a special presentment against Jackson Self for the offense of gaming. A warrant for his arrest was issued July 15 of that year. The charges were that Jack had, on March 1, 1850, "play and bet for money and other things of value at a game of cards...known as Seven-Up."
