46. Arthur Nathaniel4 SELF (Samuel Jefferson3, Jethro2, John1)(16) was born in Upson County, Ga. 21 JAN 1884. to 1838 He could read and write. Whit died 1 FEB 1945 in Upson County, Ga., at 61 years of age. His body was interred after 1 FEB 1945 in Upson County, Ga., Shiloh Baptist Church Cemetery.

He married Lula Grace HELMS Self in Thomaston, Upson County, Ga., 10 AUG 1904 in old McCoy House, a two-story former plantation home in which his parents and grandparents had lived after the war. The house, also where Milford and Evelyn were born, was rumored to be haunted. Evelyn and Dot told of one incident concerning a "drummer" or traveling salesman, and lights flickering in the second-floor hallway all night which led him to believe a family member was sick. In reality, no one had been up at all.

Lula was born in Upson County, Ga. 16 AUG 1883. Birthdate also given as 1882. She was the daughter of Matthew H. HELMS and Sarah FALLIN Helms. Lula died 5 MAR 1943 in Upson County, Ga., at 59 years of age. Her body was interred 8 MAR 1943 in Upson County, Ga., Shiloh Baptist Church Cemetery.

Whit was a farmer in Upson County, Ga., before 1910. Family lore: Whit was a sharecropper at one point, working "on halves" at the Hancock Plantation in the 1910s. He gave half his produce, from one section of the farm, to the "Big Man." He ran a large commercial cane syrup mill at another time, and finally moved his family to East Thomaston where he and his daughters eventually went to work at Thomaston Mills. Evelyn said he quit farming to work in the mill because of an unidentified disability. Finding it not to his liking, he moved the family back to the country for two years. Eventually, they returned to town to take jobs in the mill. Whit stayed in the country and did as much farming as he could, for a while living with his brother Len, who owned a general store.

GA. could read and write, owned farm F45. Lula, 26, two children, both living, no occupation, b. GA. could read and write; Milford, 4; and Evalan, 1 year, 3 mos.; Lynn Self, brother, 23, married less than a year, farmer, general farming, b. GA. could read and write; Grace Self, sister-in-law, 18, no children, no occupation, b. ALA, parents b. GA, could read and write; had not attended school in the past year.

Arthur N. Self was the head of a family on the 1920 Census in Upson County, Ga. Arthur N. Self, renter, lived in Reeves Dist; wife Lula G. Self, 36. The children included Milford E., 14, in school and educated. Evelyn C., 11, in school and educated. Sallie Lou, 7, in school and educated. Alice M., 4, not in school. Ruth E., 1 1/12, not in school.

child 110 iii. Sallie Lou SELF Duke Rogers was born in Thomaston, Upson County, Ga. 1 APR 1912. Sallie died 15 APR 1997 in Thomaston, Upson County, Ga., at 85 years of age. Her body was interred 16 APR 1997 in Thomaston, Upson County, Ga., Southview Cemetery.

She married Earnest DUKE in Alabama, 4 JUN 1930. Earnest was divorced from Sallie Lou SELF Duke Rogers before October 1946 and married again. Postcard from Helen and Thomas Blake addressed to "Miss Sallie Selfe."

She married Augustin Claudious ROGERS in Russell County, Ala., 5 JUN 1964. Gus was born in Thomaston, Upson County, Ga. 26 JUL 1902. Gus died 12 JAN 1975 in Thomaston, Upson County, Ga., at 72 years of age. His body was interred after 12 JAN 1975 in Thomaston, Upson County, Ga., Southview Cemetery.

She resided in Thomaston, Upson County, Ga. after JUN 1964, 216 N. Bethel St. She resided in Thomaston, Upson County, Ga. before APR 1997, 240 N. Green St., Apt. 215.

child 112 v. Ruth Helen SELF Wasson Blake Wade was born in Thomaston, Upson County, Ga. 3 FEB 1918. Helen died 7 SEP 2000 in Thomaston, Upson County, Ga., at 82 years of age at Providence Nursing Care Her body was interred 9 SEP 2000 in Thomaston, Upson County, Ga., Upson Memorial Gardens. She married Roy WASSON in Avondale Estates, Ga., 12 OCT 1938. Roy died about SEP 1946 in Avondale Estates, Ga., when he was struck by a train.

She married Thomas BLAKE in Atlanta, Ga., before 19 OCT 1946, less than two months after Roy's death. They honeymooned in Chattanooga, Hamilton County, Tenn., 19 OCT 1946.(17)

James and Helen Self Wade

Thomas died after 1946. Helen was unaware of Thomas' death until, while on break at work, she read his obituary in an Atlanta newspaper. His body was interred after 1946 in Atlanta, Ga. Thomas was a musician. Helen traveled with him, finally leaving him during a gig in Nashville, Tenn. He sent her royalty payments for a while.

She married James WADE 8 DEC 1956. James was born 4 JAN 1924. James died 5 SEP 1986 at 62 years of age.

She resided in Thomaston, Upson County, Ga. after 1990, 109 W. County Rd., Apt. 6Q.
