Sam applied for a military pension in Upson County, Ga., about 1908. Early History of Upson County: Sam was on the Confederate pension list of Judge J.E.F. Matthews about 1908-10, but was too young to have served in the Civil War. This could indicate he is not in actuality the son of Jet and Lucinda Self, but was in their household in 1860 (age 4) and '70 (age 13) as the son of Andrew Jackson "Jack" Self, listed as oldest sibling (as were Jack's children Willie J., James W. and Jane O in 1870, after they were orphaned) However, Evelyn Self Nelson remembers Nat Self and Dave Self as Sam's brothers, not uncles.

Samuel Self was the head of a family on the 1920 Census in Upson County, Ga., Farm 73, Family 74, Reeves Dist. Vol 100, ED 187, sheet 4. Samuel, 63, renter, educated he and his parents b. As young woman Evelyn Self Nelson would offer to cut Sam's fashionable stomach- long beard, which he said he would allow her to do for $100 -- a lot of money then. Sam was described as thin with a chest-long beard.
