     Nellie Hunt was born on 17 March 1860 in Kalamazoo, Kalamazoo Co., Michigan.^2,1 She was married by E. A. Tanner, minister, to Samuel Mark Burlingham, son of Philip Burlingham and Charity Mandana Phelps, on 27 May 1883 in Otsego, Allegan Co., Michigan. The witnesses were Chauncy and Mary Scott. Chauncy was the brother-in-law of Samuel's mother Charity, through her first marriage to Justin Scott.^3,4,2,1 She died on 27 August 1948 at Memorial Hospital in Elmhurst, Cook Co., Illinois, at age 88 of pneumonia, after 18 months of declining health, with additional complications from a fractured leg in July 1948.^2,1 She was buried on 30 August 1948 at Riverside Cemetery in Kalamazoo, Kalamazoo Co., Michigan.^2,1

     Nellie Hunt moved to Pine Creek, Allegan Co., Michigan, at the age of 15, after her mother's death, and lived with the Chauncey Scott family until her marriage in 1883.^1,5 After her husband's fishing business in Saugatuck failed in late 1883, they lived for a time in Otsego, Allegan Co., Michigan,⁴ then moved to Kalamazoo, Kalamazoo Co., Michigan, in 1887.⁴ In 1894 they moved to Delavan, Walworth Co., Wisconsin, where Samuel ran a shoe business.^1,4 In 1900 they were living in nearby Darien, Walworth Co., Wisconsin, where he was a farmer.⁶
     They moved back to Allegan Co. in 1901⁴, and in 1910 were living in Trowbridge Twp. as neighbors to their son Harry.⁷ In 1920 they were living on a fruit farm in Otsego Twp., Allegan Co., Michigan.⁸
     On 25 May 1928, a few months after her husband's death, "having decided to discontinue housekeeping," she auctioned off many of her belongings, including household furniture, a phonograph and 65 records, a washing machine, a shotgun, wood, and coal.⁹ She moved in with her son Charles's family, and was living with them in Berwyn, Cook Co., Illinois, in 1930¹⁰, and in York Twp., DuPage Co., Illinois, in 1940.¹¹
     In her earlier years she was a member of the Eastern Star, and the Grange.²

     Arthur Lee Burlingham was born on 2 December 1858 in Pine Creek, Allegan Co., Michigan.^2,1,5 He was married by E. A. Gay, Minister, to Jessie May Swikert, daughter of Jesse Swikert and Amorette Wason, on 22 February 1886 in Trowbridge Twp., Allegan Co., Michigan. The witnesses were Jessie's brother Frank Swikert and his future wife (and Arthur's sister) Laura Burlingham.⁶ He died on 19 December 1931 in Otsego, Allegan Co., Michigan, from liver cancer at age 73.^1,2,5 He was buried on 21 December 1931 at Mountain Home Cemetery in Otsego, Allegan Co., Michigan.^2,5

     Arthur Lee Burlingham lived in and around Otsego, Allegan Co., Michigan, most of his life.² In 1880 he was living as a boarder with the family of Franklin Cronkhite in Heath Twp., Allegan Co., Michigan, and working on his farm.⁷ At the time of their marriage both he and his wife Jessie were living in Trowbridge Twp., Allegan Co., Michigan,⁶ and they are listed there on their own farm in the 1900 census. Living with them were Arthur's mother Charity, and his sister Mabel Evans and her daughter Viola.⁸ By 1910 he and Jessie, and his mother Charity, had moved into a rented house in Otsego.⁹ He and Jessie were still living in a rented home in Otsego at the time of the 1920 census¹⁰, but by 1930 they had purchased their own home, at 406 S. Farmer St. in Otsego. Living with them in 1930 as boarders were Wilford and Willard Hayes (ages 32 and 7), and Ralph Leighton (age 21).¹¹
     He was a farmer during the first part of his life, but by 1910 had also begun working as a laborer in a paper mill, and soon quit farming entirely. A notice in the 20 June 1912 issue of The Otsego Union says he had "been obliged to give up farming," and would be holding an auction at his farm on 28 June.^9,12 He continued in the paper mill the rest of his life, working in the bailing room. His wife Jessie also worked there at least part of the time, and is listed as a "paper sorter" in the 1920 census.^9,10,11
     On 5 November 1923 he was hurt, probably at work, when he fell 19 feet to the bottom of a tank. He was "badly shaken up [but] no bones were fractured," and he was able to get out by climbing a steam pipe. There was a foot of water in the tank at the time, which may have helped prevent serious injury.¹³
     In May 1912 he was elected as a delegate to the Firemen's state convention to be held the following month in Kalamazoo, Kalamazoo Co., Michigan.¹⁴
     From 1882 to 1931 he was a member of the F. & A.M., and an honorary member of the Otsego Lodge, No. 78. He received his Entered Apprentice degree on 6 April 1882, and his Master Mason degree on 4 May 1882. He was also a member of the Woodman Grange, Lodge No. 610.^2,15
     He and Jessie had no natural children, but his obituary says that he "fathered many," in particular their niece Viola Rose Evans who lived with them for several years, and their nephew Basil E. Cooley who lived with them almost constantly since birth. However, although Viola (born 1883) and her mother Mabel (Burlingham) Evans are listed with them in the 1900 census, Basil (born 1897) is not listed with them in any census.²

     Jessie May Swikert was born on 14 April 1868 in Otsego Twp., Allegan Co., Michigan.¹ She was married by E. A. Gay, Minister, to Arthur Lee Burlingham, son of Philip Burlingham and Charity Mandana Phelps, on 22 February 1886 in Trowbridge Twp., Allegan Co., Michigan. The witnesses were Jessie's brother Frank Swikert and his future wife (and Arthur's sister) Laura Burlingham.² She died on 14 March 1944 in Otsego, Allegan Co., Michigan, at age 75.³ She was buried on 16 March 1944 in Allegan Co., Michigan.³

     At the time of their marriage both she and her husband Arthur were living in Trowbridge Twp., Allegan Co., Michigan,² and they are listed there on their own farm in the 1900 census. Living with them were Arthur's mother Charity, and his sister Mabel Evans and her daughter Viola.⁴ By 1910 she and Arthur, and Arthur's mother Charity, had moved into a rented house in Otsego.⁵ She and Arthur were still in a rented home in Otsego at the time of the 1920 census.⁶ By 1930 they had purchased their own home, at 406 S. Farmer St. in Otsego. Living with them in 1930 as boarders were Wilford and Willard Hayes (ages 32 and 7), and Ralph Leighton (age 21).⁷
     Her husband Arthur worked in a paper mill from at least 1910 to 1930. She also worked there at least part of the time, and is listed as a "paper sorter" in the 1920 census.^5,6,7
     Around the end of March 1932, about three months after her husband's death, she sold her house and moved in with her nephew Basil Cooley and his wife, southwest of Otsego.⁸ In 1940 she was living in Otsego with her sister Cora (Basil's mother) and Cora's third husband Lowell Herbert.⁹
     She and Arthur had no natural children, but his obituary says that he "fathered many," in particular their niece Viola Rose Evans who lived with them for several years, and their nephew Basil E. Cooley who lived with them almost constantly since birth. However, although Viola (born 1883) and her mother Mabel (Burlingham) Evans are listed with them in the 1900 census, Basil (born 1897) is not listed with them in any census.¹⁰

     Charity Mabel Burlingham was born on 6 January 1861 in Otsego, Allegan Co., Michigan.^3,4,5 She was married first, by William Cross, to Albert Elton Evans on 29 July 1882 in Otsego, Allegan Co., Michigan.^6,4 She was married second, by Rev. Ellsworth E. Coulter, to Robert Otto Crawford on 31 December 1917 in Emmett, Gem Co., Idaho.⁷ They were divorced sometime between 1920, when they were living together, and 1930, when they were living apart and he was listed in the census as widowed, and she was listed as Mabel Evans and divorced.^8,9,10 She died on 17 July 1954 at the Frints Nursing Home in Emmett, Gem Co., Idaho, at age 93 from bronchial pneumonia.^3,4 She was buried on 21 July 1954 at Riverside Cemetery in Emmett, Gem Co., Idaho.³

     In 1900 she and her daughter Viola were living with her brother Arthur and his wife Jessie in Trowbridge Twp., Allegan Co., Michigan, without her husband Albert, who has not been found in the 1900 census.^5,11
     She moved to Emmett, Canyon Co. (now Gem Co.), Idaho, where her brother Justin was living in 1906¹², and two years later filed a homestead claim in Canyon Co.¹³ In 1910 she and Hovey were living with Justin in Stuart Precinct, Canyon Co., Idaho.¹⁴
     In 1920 she was living with her second husband Robert Crawford in Montour, Gem Co., Idaho, along with her son Hovey and Robert's son Clyde Crawford.⁸
     In 1930, after her apparent divorce, she and Hovey were living in Sweet, Gem Co., Idaho, again with her brother Justin. She is listed in the census as Mabel Evans, divorced, and head of the household.¹⁰ She is listed in the 1940 census in West Emmett Prec., Gem Co., Idaho. Living with her were her granddaughter Kathleen Gribben, and a boarder, Gale Sprague.¹⁵
     She was living in California at the time of her sister Laura's death in 1947.¹⁶

     Albert Elton Evans was probably born about 1856 in Pennsylvania.^2,3,4,5 He was married by William Cross to Charity Mabel Burlingham, daughter of Philip Burlingham and Charity Mandana Phelps, on 29 July 1882 in Otsego, Allegan Co., Michigan.^2,1 He may have died before 1910, when his wife Charity was listed as a widow in the census.^6,7

     Cora Viola Burlingham was born on 17 May 1863 in Pine Creek, Allegan Co., Michigan.^4,5,1 She was married by A. M. Gould, pastor of the First M. E. Church, to Aden Willard Drake, son of William H. Drake and Julia Francelia Cole, on 18 May 1887 in Kalamazoo, Kalamazoo Co., Michigan.⁶ She died on 14 April 1935 at her home in Hope Twp., near Hastings in Barry Co., Michigan, from Bright's disease at age 71.^4,5,1 She was buried on 17 April 1935 at Pine Creek Cemetery in Otsego Twp., Allegan Co., Michigan.^4,1

     She and her husband Aden were living in Gun Plain Twp., Allegan Co., Michigan, in 1900.⁷ They moved to Kalamazoo Co., Michigan, where they were living in Oshtemo Twp. in 1910⁸, and in Kalamazoo Twp. as neighbors to their son Alvin in 1920.⁹ They moved again sometime before 1930, when they were living in Hope Twp., Barry Co., Michigan.¹⁰

     Aden Willard Drake was born on 31 May 1859 in Comstock, Kalamazoo Co., Michigan.^1,6,7 He was married by A. M. Gould, pastor of the First M. E. Church, to Cora Viola Burlingham, daughter of Philip Burlingham and Charity Mandana Phelps, on 18 May 1887 in Kalamazoo, Kalamazoo Co., Michigan.⁸ He died on 14 February 1939 at his home in Pine Grove Twp., Van Buren Co., Michigan, at age 79 from stomach and liver cancer.^1,7 He was buried on 16 February 1939 at Pine Creek Cemetery in Otsego Twp., Allegan Co., Michigan.^1,7

     In 1880 he was living in the household of Willard Higgins and his wife Eliza in Otsego Twp., Allegan Co., Michigan. Aden's mother Francelia and brother Burton were also living there. Francelia's relationship to the head of the household is listed as stepdaughter, implying she was the daughter of Willard Higgins's wife Eliza. Aden and Burton are listed as nephews, but would have actually been grand-nephews.⁹
     He and his wife Cora were living in Gun Plain Twp., Allegan Co., Michigan, in 1900.¹⁰ They moved to Kalamazoo Co., Michigan, where they were living in Oshtemo Twp. in 1910¹¹, and in Kalamazoo Twp. as neighbors to their son Alvin in 1920.¹² They moved again sometime before 1930, when they were living in Hope Twp., Barry Co., Michigan.¹³
     His marriage record lists his occupation as "lawyer," but this is no doubt a transcription error, and should be sawyer. In the 1880 census his occupation is listed as "saw mill," and in the census records of 1900-1930 his occupation is listed as either farmer or laborer.^{8,9,10,11,12,13}

     George Allen Burlingham was born on 26 October 1868 (his cemetery marker has the year as 1869) in Pine Creek, Allegan Co., Michigan.^3,5,6 He married first Bessie Flynn on 3 July 1894 in Allegan, Allegan Co., Michigan.⁷ He married second Josephine Frances Goshorn, daughter of James Goshorn and Margaret Barrager, on 14 November 1898 in St. Joseph, Berrien Co., Michigan.^8,9,10 He died on 31 May 1948 at age 79, from an apparent heart attack at a roadside park along US 12 about a mile east of Galesburg in Comstock Twp., Kalamazoo Co., Michigan. He, his son Russell and his wife, and some neighbors, had spent Memorial day at Lake Michigan, and had stopped their on the way home for a picnic supper.^4,3,11 He was buried on 4 June 1948 at Mountain Home Cemetery in Otsego, Allegan Co., Michigan.^4,12,6,5

     After their marriage he and his second wife Josephine lived for a time in St. Joseph, Berrien Co., Michigan.¹³ By 1910 they had moved to Otsego Twp., Allegan Co., Michigan,¹⁴ where they remained most of the rest of their lives.^{14,15,16,17,3} George's brother Philip Phelps Burlingham was living with them in 1930¹⁶, and in 1940 a hired man, Charles E. Mumbower, was living with them.¹⁷ He and Josephine moved to Battle Creek, Calhoun Co., Michigan, in 1946 to live with their son Russell.³
     As a young man he excelled in steam power plant work, but turned to farming sometime before 1910.^{5,13,14,15,16,17}

     Josephine Frances Goshorn was born on 26 April 1873 on her parents' farm in Saugatuck, Allegan Co., Michigan.^1,3 She married George Allen Burlingham, son of Philip Burlingham and Charity Mandana Phelps, on 14 November 1898 in St. Joseph, Berrien Co., Michigan.^4,3,2 She died on 9 December 1947 (her obituary says 10 December) at her son's home in Battle Creek, Calhoun Co., Michigan, at age 74 after several weeks of failing health.^1,3 She was buried on 12 December 1947 at Mountain Home Cemetery in Otsego, Allegan Co., Michigan.^2,5

     Josephine Frances Goshorn was a schoolteacher at the time of her marriage.⁴ After their marriage she and her husband George lived for a time in St. Joseph, Berrien Co., Michigan.⁶ By 1910 they had moved to Otsego Twp., Allegan Co., Michigan,⁷ where they remained most of the rest of their lives.^7,8,9,10,11 George's brother Philip Phelps Burlingham was living with them in 1930⁹, and in 1940 a hired man, Charles E. Mumbower, was living with them.¹⁰ She and George moved to Battle Creek, Calhoun Co., Michigan, in 1946 to live with their son Russell.¹¹

     Charles Mark Burlingham was born on 2 February 1898 on a farm about 2.5 miles northwest of Delavan, Walworth Co., Wisconsin.^3,4,5 He was married first, by Dr. George Wheaton Taft, to Marian Redpath Taft, daughter of Miner Cole Taft and Mary Jean Hogg, on 23 October 1926 at the home of bride's mother in Otsego, Allegan Co., Michigan.^2,6,7 He married second Gladys Marian Rosenbaum, daughter of Lambert W. Rosenbaum and Hazel Zimmerman, in 1972.^8,9 He died on 6 November 1993 at the Fairview Baptist Home in Downers Grove, DuPage Co., Illinois, at age 95.^9,10 He was buried on 9 November 1993 at Chapel Hill Gardens West Cemetery in Oakbrook Terrace, DuPage Co., Illinois.⁹

     He lived in Walworth Co., Wisconsin, the first three years of his life, in a house about 2.5 miles northwest of Delavan that was built in 1895 by his father. It was sold in 1901⁴, and his family moved to an 80-acre farm five miles west of Otsego in Trowbridge Twp., Allegan Co., Michigan, where his parents were from.⁴ In March 1913 they moved into a 75-year-old house with eight acres of land, one mile west of Otsego.⁴
     From 1912 to 1917 he attended Otsego High School, graduating in 1917.⁴ While in high school he worked in the summers of 1913 and 1914 doing miscellaneous farm work⁴, and in the summers of 1915 and 1916 for the Mac Sim Bar Paper Co. in Otsego, loading paper. The pay there was good, $1.75/hour. He worked 6 days/week, 10 hours/day, walking 1.5 miles each way to work.⁴
     After graduation from high school, he spent a short time with Sears Roebuck in Chicago, the Bardeen Paper Co. in Otsego, and again with the Mac Sim Bar Paper Co. in Otsego.⁴
     He attended Kalamazoo College in Kalamazoo, Kalamazoo Co., Michigan, from 1918 to 1922, graduating with an A.B. degree.^4,11 He also played on the football team from at least 1918 to 1920, lettering all three years. In 1919 the team went 5-2 and won the MIAA (Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Conference) title. Highlights included a narrow 14-0 loss to Notre Dame in 1919, and a 21-2 win over Michigan State in 1920.^11,12
     In 1918, during his first year at Kalamazoo College, he was a private in the Student Army Training Corps. This was a program set up by the National Committee on Education and Special Training in June 1918 to develop a source for officers in an expanded Army. He was one of 122 students in the program at Kalamazoo College. Everyone in the program took a course in war issues, and additional courses were offered in accounting, military law, military English, surveying, military hygiene and sanitation, military French, physics, chemistry, and mathematics. Everyone also participated in two hours of exercises each day. The program was discontinued by the War Department in December, at the end of World War I, and all the men were discharged on 15 December 1918.^4,13
     In the summer of 1919 he did miscellaneous work, and in the summer of 1920 he worked for the post office, both in Kalamazoo.⁴ Charles Mark Burlingham attended the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, Washtenaw Co., Michigan, in the summer of 1921.⁴
     He was employed from 1922 to 1924 by the Western Electric Co. in Cicero, Cook Co., Illinois, doing industrial training, then specification writing.⁴ In April 1924 he transferred to Illinois Bell Telephone, where he worked in switchboard specification writing, costs, and studies. He left there in 1935⁴, and in 1936 worked for the Public Service Commission of West Virginia doing public utility appraisal work.⁴ He started work at the Electro-Motive Division of General Motors in LaGrange, Cook Co., Illinois, in January 1937 doing testing, engineering, and supervision. He remained there until his retirement on 1 January 1965.⁴
     After their marriage, he and his first wife Marian lived for a time in Berwyn, Cook Co., Illinois,¹⁴ then moved to Grant Street in Downers Grove, DuPage Co., Illinois, where they lived from 1932 to 1938.⁴ They next moved to Lombard, DuPage Co., Illinois, on Finley Road, where they lived most of the rest of their married life.⁴ They are listed in DuPage Co. in the 1940 census, in York Twp. (which includes part of Lombard).¹⁵ Charles's widowed mother Nellie lived with them, probably from about 1928 when she gave up housekeeping and auctioned off many of her household goods, until her death in 1948.^16,14,15,17 His cousin Charles Swikert and his wife Verda also lived with them for a short time before moving into their own new house in Sugar Grove, Kane Co., Illinois, in the summer of 1951.^18,19
     He had an operation on his neck on 22 March 1951 at Glen Elyn Hospital in Glen Elyn, DuPage Co., Illinois.²⁰ On 18 January 1964, at St. Charles Hospital in St. Charles, Kane Co., Illinois, he had his appendix removed. He came home on 25 January.^21,22 His eyesight failed in his later years, starting around 1978.²³
     He and his second wife Gladys lived in Downers Grove, DuPage Co., Illinois,²⁴ where he served as an elder at St. Luke Presbyterian Church.⁴ He was a member of the F. & A.M., Grove Lodge 824, and was also a DuPage Farm Bureau trustee.^8,9

     Marian Redpath Taft was born on 27 February 1896 in Kalamazoo, Kalamazoo Co., Michigan.^4,5,6 She was married by Dr. George Wheaton Taft to Charles Mark Burlingham, son of Samuel Mark Burlingham and Nellie Hunt, on 23 October 1926 at her mother's home in Otsego, Allegan Co., Michigan.^3,2,7 She died on 13 March 1971 at age 75.⁶ She was buried on 16 March 1971 at Chapel Hill Gardens West Cemetery in Oakbrook Terrace, DuPage Co., Illinois.⁶

     Marian Redpath Taft was a relative of President William Howard Taft.⁴
     She graduated from Western Michigan College in Kalamazoo, Kalamazoo Co., Michigan.⁴
     In 1926 she was living in Otsego, Allegan Co., Michigan, where she led the kindergarten department for the Otsego public schools.¹ After their marriage, she and her husband Charles lived for a time in Berwyn, Cook Co., Illinois,⁸ then moved to Grant Street in Downers Grove, DuPage Co., Illinois, where they lived from 1932 to 1938.¹ They next moved to Lombard, DuPage Co., Illinois, on Finley Road, where they lived most of the rest of their married life.¹ They are listed in DuPage Co. in the 1940 census, in York Twp. (which includes part of Lombard).⁹
     On 22 March 1951, the day of her husband's neck operation, she suffered a heart attack while leaving the hospital in Glen Elyn, DuPage Co., Illinois.¹⁰

     Gladys Marian Rosenbaum was born on 19 October 1908 in Chicago, Cook Co., Illinois.^1,2 She married first Phillip W. Rahill on 15 October 1931 in Cook Co., Illinois.^3,1 She married second Charles Mark Burlingham, son of Samuel Mark Burlingham and Nellie Hunt, in 1972.^4,5 She died on 2 February 1995 at age 86.¹ She was buried on 6 February 1995 at Beverly Cemetery in Blue Island, Cook Co., Illinois.¹

     She and her second husband Charles lived in Downers Grove, DuPage Co., Illinois.¹ She was a member of the Fairview Village Friendship Club, and the Order of Eastern Star, American Chapter 429 and Vesta Chapter 242.¹ She also belonged to the St. Luke Presbyterian Church.¹

     Harry Lee Burlingham was born on 24 August 1887 in Otsego, Allegan Co., Michigan.^5,6,1,7 He married first Edna Brown, daughter of Eugene Brown and Emma Conneley, on 24 December 1908 in Plainwell, Allegan Co., Michigan.^8,7 Edna filed for divorce on 26 April 1917 on grounds of desertion, and the divorce was granted on 15 September 1917.^9,7 He married second Mildred E. Tait, daughter of Alexander Tait and Gertrude Harrington, on 4 August 1922 in Englewood, Chicago, Cook Co., Illinois. Their honeymoon was an extended trip through the west.^10,7,11 He married third Grace May Stratton, daughter of Wilfred Stratton and Mattie Shears, on 13 October 1960 in White Pigeon, St. Joseph Co., Michigan. Their children held a reception for them at the Methodist church, and their honeymoon was a three-week trip to Chicago and Washington.^12,13,7 He died on 17 November 1961 at Borgess Hospital in Michigan at age 74. His death was a result of a car-truck collision on U.S. 131 near Cooper (Cooper Center?) that also killed his stepson, Calvin S. Lovett. The accident occurred around midnight when the car crossed the center line into the path of a truck. Burlingham died at about 4:00 AM. Lovett was dead on arrival at the hospital at 12:35 AM. The two men's wives, Grace Burlingham and Margaret Lovett (the driver of the car), were seriously injured. The truck driver was not hurt.^14,15 He was buried at Wenatchee City Cemetery in Wenatchee, Chelan Co., Washington.¹⁶

     In 1910 he and his first wife Edna, and their infant daughter Ruth, were living in Trowbridge Twp., Allegan Co., Michigan, as neighbors to his father Samuel.¹⁷ He apparently left Edna sometime between 1915, when their daughter Eva was born, and April of 1917, when Edna filed for divorce.^7,18,19
     On 5 June 1917, when he registered for the World War I draft, he was living in Belvidere, Boone Co., Illinois, and working as a laborer at the National Sewing Machine Co. He listed himself as single, with no dependents, and claimed exemption from the draft due to a loss of sight in his left eye.⁵ He nevertheless did serve in the U.S. Army during World War I, from 1917 to 1919.⁷
     He and his second wife Mildred lived in Malaga, Chelan Co., Washington, probably from at least 1930 to 1948, where he had a fruit farm and she was a bookkeeper for a fruit growers association.^20,21,6,2 They moved to nearby Wenatchee, Chelan Co., Washington, sometime before 1960.²²

     Edna Brown was born about 1890 in Michigan.⁴ She married first Harry Lee Burlingham, son of Samuel Mark Burlingham and Nellie Hunt, on 24 December 1908 in Plainwell, Allegan Co., Michigan.^4,2 Edna filed for divorce on 26 April 1917 on grounds of desertion, and the divorce was granted on 15 September 1917.^5,2 She was married second, by J. Calvin Meese, minister, to Carl Nimtz on 20 September 1917 in Grand Rapids, Kent Co., Michigan.¹

     In 1910 she and her first husband Harry, and their infant daughter Ruth, were living in Trowbridge Twp., Allegan Co., Michigan, as neighbors to her husband's father Samuel.³
     She and her second husband Carl lived in Kalamazoo, Kalamazoo Co., Michigan, from at least 1920 to 1940. Her daughters Ruth and Eva Burlingham from her first marriage were with them in 1920, and Eva was still with them in 1930.^6,7,8

     Mildred E. Tait was born on 16 August 1884 in Fond du Lac, Fond du Lac Co., Wisconsin.^7,8 She married first Charles W. Stephens on 6 September 1906 in Fond du Lac, Fond du Lac Co., Wisconsin.^4,1 She married second Harry Lee Burlingham, son of Samuel Mark Burlingham and Nellie Hunt, on 4 August 1922 in Englewood, Chicago, Cook Co., Illinois. Their honeymoon was an extended trip through the west.^1,2,9 She died unexpectedly on 18 April 1960 at Deaconess Hospital in Wenatchee, Chelan Co., Washington, at age 75 from heart disease.^10,11,2 She was buried on 21 April 1960 at Wenatchee City Cemetery in Wenatchee, Chelan Co., Washington.^12,13

     She and her second husband Harry lived in Malaga, Chelan Co., Washington, probably from at least 1930 to 1948, where he had a fruit farm and she was a bookkeeper for a fruit growers association.^3,14,15,16 They moved to nearby Wenatchee, Chelan Co., Washington, sometime before 1960.¹⁰
     She was hospitalized after suffering a bad heart attack about 29 June 1959.¹⁷

     Grace May Stratton was born on 15 June 1893 in Otsego, Allegan Co., Michigan.^2,3 She was married first, by H. C. Chamberlin, Minister, to John Calvin Lovett on 25 September 1912 in Otsego Twp., Allegan Co., Michigan.^1,4 She married second Harry Lee Burlingham, son of Samuel Mark Burlingham and Nellie Hunt, on 13 October 1960 in White Pigeon, St. Joseph Co., Michigan. Their children held a reception for them at the Methodist church, and their honeymoon was a three-week trip to Chicago and Washington.^5,6,2 She died on 12 September 1985 in Plainwell, Allegan Co., Michigan, at age 92.⁷ She was buried, as Grace M. Lovett, at Mountain Home Cemetery in Otsego, Allegan Co., Michigan.⁸

     Grace May Stratton lived in Otsego, Allegan Co., Michigan, most of her life.²
     She was seriously injured in a car-truck collision on 17 November 1961 on US 131 near Cooper (Cooper Center?), Michigan. Her husband Harry Lee Burlingham and son Calvin Lovett died in the accident, which occurred at about midnight when the car crossed the center line into the path of a truck. Her daughter-in-law Margaret Lovett (the driver of the car) was also seriously injured.^4,2

     Howard William Town was born on 11 April 1886 in Remus, Mecosta Co., Michigan.^6,3,2 He married first Jessie Mae Phillips, daughter of William N. Phillips and Phoebe Artman, on 6 February 1904 in Pontiac, Oakland Co., Michigan.⁷ They were divorced on 9 October 1931 in South Bend, St. Joseph Co., Indiana.⁸ He married second Perla Elisabeth Singley, daughter of Benjamin D. Singley and Susan C. Gaylor, probably about 1937.^2,9,10 He died at 5:30 PM on 22 August 1966 at home in Allentown, Lehigh Co., Pennsylvania, at age 80 of cardiac arrest, after suffering an acute myocardial infarction with congestive heart failure five days earlier.² He was buried on 26 August 1966 at Odd Fellows Cemetery in Tamaqua, Schuylkill Co., Pennsylvania.²

     His last name also appears with the spelling Towne.¹¹
     In 1900 he was living with his father and stepmother Otis O. and Dora Towne at Oxford House on Kearsley St. in Flint, Genesee Co., Michigan.¹²
     In 1910 he and his first wife Jessie were living with their children Otis, Ione, and Kenneth, as boarders in the home of her parents William and Phoebe Phillips on Town Line Rd. in Pontiac, Oakland Co., Michigan.¹³
     Sometime before 12 September 1918, when he registered for the World War I draft, he moved to South Bend, St. Joseph Co., Indiana.⁶ In the 1919 South Bend city directory he is listed at 1125 Queen St.¹⁴, but when he registered for the draft in 1918, and in the 1920 South Bend city directory, he listed his home address as 406 S. Lafayette.^15,16 In the 1921 South Bend directory he is listed on Niles Rd.¹⁷, and in 1923 and 1925 he is listed on RD Route 5.¹⁸ He and his wife Jessie are listed together on RD route 5 in 1926¹⁹, on RD route 3 in 1928²⁰, at 121 1/2 LaPorte Ave. in 1929 and 1930²¹, and at 512 Euclid Ave. in 1931.²²
     After his divorce, he lived at 931 S. 30th in South Bend in 1932²³, at 615 S. 35th in 1933²⁴, at 1309 Wilber in 1934²⁵, and at 1022 Clover in 1937.²⁶ Living with him were his sons Clarence and Edward in 1932, 1933, 1934, and 1937, his daughter Ione in 1932 and 1933, and his son Kenneth in 1934.²⁷
     In 1938 he was living at 25 N. 14th St. in Allentown, Lehigh Co., Pennsylvania.²⁸ He was back in South Bend by 1941, however, living at 507 1/2 E. South St.²⁹ On 27 April 1942, the date of the Fourth Registration for the World War II Draft, he and his second wife Perla were living at 220 Ida Street in Berwick, Columbia Co., Pennsylvania.³ They lived at 530 High St. in Bethlehem, Northampton Co., Pennsylvania, from at least 1947 to 1949.³⁰ At the time of his death in 1966 they were living at 728 North 7th St. in Allentown.²
     He worked at several different jobs over the years. He was a painter in an automobile factory, probably from at least 1904 to 1919 (for the South Bend Spring Wagon Co. in 1919), and again in 1934, in South Bend^7,13,1,31; a railroad clerk, probably from 1920 to 1933, and again in 1937 (for the Michigan Central Railroad in 1920 and 1921, and the New Jersey, Indiana, and Illinois Railroad from 1923 to 1931) in South Bend³²; a salesman for Real Silk Hosiery Mills in Allentown, Lehigh Co., Pennsylvania, in 1938²⁸; a watchman for the Grand Trunk Terminal Warehouse Co. in South Bend in 1941²⁹; for A. C. F. (American Car & Foundry) in Berwick, Columbia Co., Pennsylvania, in 1942³; and a weigh master for Bethlehem Steel from at least 1947 to 1949 in Bethlehem, Northampton Co., Pennsylvania.^30,2

     Jessie Mae Phillips was born on 8 September 1888 in Pontiac Twp., Oakland Co., Michigan.^1,2 She married first Howard William Town, son of Otis Oren Town and Jennie L. Sowle, on 6 February 1904 in Pontiac, Oakland Co., Michigan.³ They were divorced on 9 October 1931 in South Bend, St. Joseph Co., Indiana.⁴ She married second Edward Nicholas Dion, son of Charles J. Dion and Mary Pierce, on 4 January 1932 in Porter Co., Indiana.⁵ They were divorced on 24 March 1942 in St. Joseph Co., Indiana.⁶ She died of a heart attack at 11:15 PM on 16 August 1956 at her home in South Bend, St. Joseph Co., Indiana, at age 67.² She was buried on 20 August 1956 at Highland Cemetery in South Bend, St. Joseph Co., Indiana. Funeral services were at the Welsheimer Funeral Home in South Bend, with Rev. Kenneth R. Hemphill of the First Methodist Church officiating.⁷

     In 1910 she and her first husband Howard were living with their children Otis, Ione, and Kenneth, as boarders in the home of her parents William and Phoebe Phillips on Town Line Rd. in Pontiac, Oakland Co., Michigan.⁸ She moved to South Bend, St. Joseph Co., Indiana, in 1918², where she lived the rest of her life.²
     She and Howard are listed on RD route 5 in the 1926 South Bend city directory⁹, on RD route 3 in 1928¹⁰, at 121 1/2 LaPorte Ave. in 1929 and 1930¹¹, and at 512 Euclid Ave. in 1931.¹²
     She and her second husband Edward are listed at 311 Ohio in South Bend in 1932¹³, at 1727 Franklin in 1933¹⁴, at 848 Rush in 1934¹⁵, and at 806 S. Fellows from 1935 to 1939.¹⁶ They are listed together in the 1940 census, along with Jessie's daughter Betty Town, on Sherdian St. in South Bend.¹⁷ Later, after her divorce from Edward, she lived with her daughter Betty at 633 Cottage Grove Ave. in 1944, at 1007 Oak in 1945-46, and at 824 1/2 Lindsey in 1947.¹⁸ She continued living with Betty and her family after Betty's marriage to Robert Douglass, first at 2511 W. Ewing Ave. from about 1949 to 1955, then at 2005 Marquette Blvd. until her death in 1956.^19,2
     She worked as an operator for the Ball-Band Co. in 1944²⁰ and as a saleswoman for J. C. Penney in 1945-46.²¹

     Calvin Phelps was born on 30 May 1790 (based on his age at death of 86 years, 9 months, 13 days, as inscribed on his tombstone; the Burlingham genealogy says he was born 27 June 1790) in Blandford, Hampshire Co., Massachusetts.^3,4,5 He married first Laura Stiles, daughter of Ephraim Stiles and Esther Moseley, on 4 January 1815 (Stiles says in 1814).^6,5,7 He was married second, by A. G. Gardner, Justice of the Peace, to Martha P. Maynard, daughter of Moses Maynard and Lucy Davis, on 6 March 1837 in Auburn, Geauga Co., Ohio.^6,8 He died on 12 March 1877 in Newbury, Geauga Co., Ohio, at age 86 (his obituary says at age 87) of inflammation of the bladder.^6,4,3 He was buried at South Newbury Cemetery (Section 1, Lot 17) in Geauga Co., Ohio.³

     Calvin Phelps lived in Blandford, Hampshire Co., Massachusetts, until 1811.⁴ At age 21, he moved with his parents to St. Lawrence Co., New York.^4,9 He was one of five founding members of the First Congregational Church in Russell, St. Lawrence Co., New York.⁴
     During the War of 1812 he served as a private and corporal in Capt. Josiah Farrar's detached Company of New York Militia, Lt. Col. Christopher P. Bellinger's Regiment. He enlisted at Russell, St. Lawrence Co., New York, on 12 May 1812, and was stationed at Ogdensburg, St. Lawrence Co., where his duties were to guard the harbor and the vicinity, and to enforce the no-intercourse law then in effect barring trade with England and France. He was not in any battles. He was paid $5.00/month, plus a clothing allowance of $12.07 at the end of the second term. He was officially discharged at Ogdensburg, St. Lawrence Co., on 3 September 1812. He applied for bounty land under the Congressional Act of 28 September 1850, and received two land warrants. On 18 April 1871 he applied for a pension under the Congressional Act of 14 February 1871, and received $8.00/month starting 30 October 1871. He also applied for an award based on his service, and received $115.00.^{10,4,6,11,12,13,14}
     He and his first wife Laura moved from Ohio to Bellevue, Eaton Co., Michigan, about 1834, traveling by covered wagon with four other families, presumably including his brother Asa.^15,16 The family suffered from disease a great deal. Quoting Mrs. John T. Hayt in Pioneer Collections, Report of the Pioneer Society of the State of Michigan, Vol. 3:
     He was one of four voters in the first election in Eaton Co., Michigan, in April 1835. The election was held in a log shanty. Three of the voters, including Calvin Phelps, made up the election board. In the morning, he took off his hat, stood in front of the shanty, and declared "The polls of this election are now opened," and warned all present to keep the peace. The four voters elected themselves to the best offices.^18,19 He was a delegate to the first county convention held to nominate county officers. There were 17 delegates, one for every 50 people in the county. The convention was held at the log house of Jonathan Searls in Eaton, Eaton Co., Michigan, on 7 March 1838.²⁰
     In the book Pioneer Collections, Report of the Pioneer and Historical Society of the State of Michigan, Vol. 8, in the chapter "Recollections of Some of the Pioneers of Bellevue," John F. Hinman relates the following anecdote:
     Although they were married in Geauga Co., Ohio, where Martha's family lived, he and his second wife Martha settled in Bellevue, Eaton Co., Michigan, where Calvin had moved three years earlier. Since Calvin had supposedly moved his family to Michigan from Ohio, it seems possible that he had lived in the Geauga Co. area before moving to Michigan, and that he and Martha had known each other from that time.^15,6
     On 2 November 1837, eight months after his marriage to Martha Maynard, he received land patents for two tracts of land that he had purchased from the federal government, totaling 117.44 acres in Eaton Co., Michigan.^22,23 About a year and a half later, on 1 May 1839, he was issued a patent for 80 acres that he had purchased in Calhoun Co., Michigan.²⁴
     He and his wife Martha moved from Bellevue to Newbury Twp., Geauga Co., Ohio, in June 1848.⁶ They are listed in the census of 1850 in Auburn Twp., Geauga Co., Ohio, along with their children Calvin M. and M. O. Phelps. His occupation is listed as farmer. They were living next door to Martha's brother Luther and his family. Also listed in Luther's household were his (and Martha's) parents Moses and Lucy Maynard, and Calvin's daughter C. M. Phelps.²⁵ In 1850 he was taxed 9.1 cents on property in Auburn Twp. valued at $14.²⁶
     In the 1860 census he and Martha are listed in South Newbury, Geauga Co., Ohio. Living with them were their daughter Martha and her husband Clinton Morton. Calvin's occupation is listed as a carpenter.²⁷ They are listed twice in the 1870 census, both times in Newbury Twp. Calvin's occupation is listed as a farmer.^28,29
     His will was dated 30 April 1873 in Geauga Co., Ohio, and proved 1 May 1877. Witnesses to the will were William B. Maynard and George William Wilson, who was also named as executor. Wilson apparently refused the duty, however, and E. J. Wicks was appointed administrator. In his will he left all his property to his wife Martha, with the proviso that the executor could sell his real estate to pay debts, except for one acre reserved for his wife. The land was sold on 20 December 1877 to his widow for $500. At her death, any property remaining was to go to his daughters Charity M. Burlingham, Margaret S. Pratt, and Martha O. Gilbert. Charity and Margaret were specifically left two feather beds and a pair of gold earrings that had belonged to their mother. He died insolvent. The final administrator's account dated 21 May 1878 showed credits of $30.00 from the sale of a cow, $26.40 from a pension, and $500.00 from the sale of his land (to his widow Martha), for a total of $556.40. After his burial expenses and debts were paid, $493.20 was left, which was "paid out to widow for years support."^30,31

     Laura Stiles was born on 16 September 1796 in Westfield, Hampshire Co., Massachusetts (the Burlingham genealogy says in Russell, St. Lawrence Co., New York).^2,3 She married Calvin Phelps, son of Philip Phelps and Catherine Moss, on 4 January 1815 (Stiles says in 1814).^4,3,2 She died on 18 May 1835 at age 38.^3,2 She was buried at Bellevue Cemetery in Bellevue, Eaton Co., Michigan. She, and her children who died young, were the first burials at Bellevue Cemetery. Records were not started there until 1850, and thus these first burials are not shown.⁵

     She and her husband Calvin moved from Ohio to Bellevue, Eaton Co., Michigan, about 1834, traveling by covered wagon with four other families.^5,6

     Ann Sherwood was born on 22 February 1807 in Richfield, Otsego Co., New York.² She was married first, by Col. Isaac Barnes, to Erastus Ami Jackson on 5 February 1832 (the History of Allegan and Barry Counties, Michigan, says December 1832) in Allegan Co., Michigan. This was a double wedding, with the bride's sister Mary and A. L. Cotton, and was the first wedding in Allegan County.^4,5 She married second Philip Burlingham, son of Philip Burlingham and Polly Babcock, on 27 April 1836 in Otsego Twp., Allegan Co., Michigan. They were married by Oka Town, husband of the bride's sister Martha Sherwood. The witnesses were (--?--) Thomas and Martha Town (probably the bride's sister).¹ She died on 3 July 1847, in childbirth at age 40.²

     In her first husband Erastus Jackson's will, dated 29 June 1835 and recorded on 7 December 1835, she and her brother Hull Sherwood were named executors. The will left everything to her and their daughter Calista, to be divided equally. In the final settlement, on 2 February 1844, she received 25 acres of their property, and Calista received the remaining 34.42 acres.^6,7
     On 10 January 1856 the court in Allegan Co. appointed a commission to appraise and divide the property left to her by her first husband equally among her surviving children Calista Squier (by her first husband), and Susan Price, Ann Burlingham, Martha Burlingham, and Erastus J. Burlingham (by her second husband Philip Burlingham). The latter three were minors, and wards of Philip Burlingham. At that date, the land consisted of Lots 6-9, 18, 21-27, and 30-68, all in Burlingham's Addition to Otsego Village, and was appraised at $2000. The commissioners apportioned the land among the five children on 16 January, with each receiving a selection of lots valued at $400.⁸

     Laura Ann Phelps was born on 16 August 1824 in Edwards, St. Lawrence Co., New York.^3,4,2 She married first John W. Mountjoy on 18 December 1843 in Eaton, Eaton Co., Michigan.^5,3 She married second Philip Burlingham, son of Philip Burlingham and Polly Babcock, on 7 March 1849 in Otsego Twp., Allegan Co., Michigan. They were married by Abram Hoag, and the witnesses were John G. South and Betsey South.² She died on 22 July 1854 at age 29.^4,3 She was buried at Pine Creek Cemetery in Otsego Twp., Allegan Co., Michigan.⁴

     Laura Ann Phelps moved to Michigan with her parents when she was young.³ She and her second husband Philip are listed in Otsego Twp., Allegan Co., Michigan, in the 1850 census with their children Susan, Ann, Martha, Erastus J., and Inez I. Also listed are Chester Mountjoy and Wm. H. Mountjoy, Laura's sons from her first marriage, to John W. Mountjoy.⁶

     Justin Scott was born on 17 September 1824 (his marriage record says he was 24 in 1853, but this is likely an error) in Monroe Co., New York.^3,4,5,1 He married Charity Mandana Phelps, daughter of Calvin Phelps and Laura Stiles, on 7 April 1853 in Otsego Twp., Allegan Co., Michigan. One of the witnesses was a Mrs. Burlingham, probably Charity's sister Laura.¹ He died on 25 March 1854 at age 29.^6,3 He was buried at Pine Creek Cemetery in Otsego Twp., Allegan Co., Michigan.³

     On 14 July 1842, after the death of his father Giles Scott in May 1840, his uncle Philip Burlingham was appointed as his guardian.²
     He served in the U. S. Army during the Mexican War, enlisting in Co. B, Regiment of Mounted Riflemen, on 16 July 1847 in Otsego, Michigan. At the time of his enlistment he was described as being 5 feet 8 3/4 inches tall, with hazel eyes, brown hair, and a fair complexion.
     The regiment was originally created in May 1846 to protect wagon trains along the Oregon Trail, but was soon redirected to service in the Mexican War. During Justin Scott's service they fought in the Battles of Contreras and Churubusco on 19 and 20 August 1847, supported the assault on Chapultepec on 13 September, and entered Mexico City on 14 September. They returned to Jefferson Barracks, Missouri, on 24 July 1848, where Justin Scott was discharged at the end of his service on 31 July 1848.^4,7
     He is listed as a farmer in the 1850 census for Otsego Twp., Allegan Co., Michigan.⁵

     Frank Henry Woodin was born on 8 December 1849 (his grave marker says 1850) in Trumbull Co., Ohio.^4,6,7 He married Isabell Delilah Dornan, daughter of William Dornan and Nancy McClurg, on 7 March 1876 in Ganges, Allegan Co., Michigan. They were married by John R. Oden, Minister, and the witnesses were Julia Parsons and Kate R. Oden.^8,9,3 He died on 11 April 1915 in Ganges Twp., Allegan Co., Michigan, at age 65 from uremic poisoning, with an enlarged prostate as a contributing factor.^4,10 He was buried on 14 April 1915 at Plummerville Cemetery in Allegan Co., Michigan.⁴

     In the 1850 and 1870 censuses, his given name is listed as Francis.^6,11 He came to Allegan Co., Michigan, from Ohio with his parents in 1862.^5,12,13 Frank Henry Woodin and his wife Isabell continued to live there after their marriage. His widowed father Federal lived with them, probably from at least 1880 to 1900.^14,15,16 At the time of his death, he owned land in Ganges Twp. described as the "E 1/3 of the N 3/4 of the W 1/2 NE 1/4 Sec. 29, T-2-North, Range 16-East ... 20 acres."¹ He was a farmer all his life, either on a general farm or, in 1900 at least, a fruit farm.^14,15,16,4

     Isabell Delilah Dornan was born on 14 August 1850 in Ohio.^1,6,7 She married Frank Henry Woodin, son of Federal W. Woodin and Maria Brazee, on 7 March 1876 in Ganges, Allegan Co., Michigan. They were married by John R. Oden, Minister, and the witnesses were Julia Parsons and Kate R. Oden.^8,2,5 She died on 21 May 1928 in Ganges Twp., Allegan Co., Michigan, at age 77. Her death certificate lists the cause of death as "Senility - Herpes Zoster" (i.e., shingles).^1,9 She was buried on 24 May 1928 at Plummerville Cemetery in Fennville, Allegan Co., Michigan.^1,10

     She and her husband Frank lived in Ganges Twp., Allegan Co., Michigan. Her husband's widowed father Federal lived with them, probably from at least 1880 to 1900.^11,6,12
     She died intestate, and Perry Wright was appointed administrator of her estate. A petition by her son Edward for appointment of an administrator listed the estimated value of her real estate as $1200, with no personal property. The real estate was apparently sold, and the proceeds distributed to the heirs.¹³

     William Dornan was born on 30 March 1820 in Elk Run Twp., Columbiana Co., Ohio.^5,6,3,7,8 He was married first, by Jon. Morris, J. P., to Nancy McClurg, daughter of William McClurg and Nancy (?), on 30 November 1847 in Elk Run Twp., Columbiana Co., Ohio.^9,3,10,11 He married second Mary Jane Riheldaffar on 23 November 1873.^12,10 He died on 12 October 1892 (Allegan Co. Pioneer Society Records say 9 October 1892) in Ganges Twp., Allegan Co., Michigan, at age 72.^5,13,12,10,7 He was buried at Plummerville Cemetery in Allegan Co., Michigan.⁵

     In 1851 William Dornan and his wife Nancy settled in Ganges Twp., Allegan Co., Michigan. William moved his family there after a prospecting tour. They settled on section 20, and cleared 80 acres by hand. They later sold this property, and bought 160 acres in sections 20 and 29. Still later they moved to section 7, where they bought a 37-acre fruit farm.^3,12,10 He was a farmer, producing as much as 55 bushels of wheat per acre.³
     He is listed in the census of 1870 in Ganges Twp., with his children Marcus (age 21), Isabel (19), John (17), Robert (15), George (14), Matilda (12), Ira (9), and Harvey (6). He owned real estate valued at $6400, and personal property valued at $1200.¹⁴ He and his second wife Mary are listed in the 1880 census in Ganges, Allegan Co., Michigan, with his son Ira E. (age 18), daughter Matilda R. Howell (age 22), and grandson Willie (age 2).⁶
     Ridley lists separate daughters for William Dornan named Matilda and Rachel M. However, his daughter Rachel M., who would have been 12 at that time, is not listed in the 1870 census, but Matilda is listed, as age 12. And Matilda R. Howell, age 22, is listed in the 1880 census. It seems likely that the daughter Matilda given by Ridley is actually Rachel Matilda (or possible Matilda Rachel).^14,3,6
     At one point during his life he lost all his possessions in a fire, and started over.^3,10 He was a Methodist.^3,10 He was once a member of the Democratic Party, and was also associated with the Greenback Party.^3,10
     He died intestate, and the inventory of his estate, with Ira E. Dornan named as administrator, listed the following property:
