Virginia Magazine of History and Biography - Early Generations of the NEWTON family
of Westmoreland County, Virginia, Vol. XXXVI by Charles F. Cochran, Washington, DC. "JOHN
NEWTON was the son of THOMAS NEWTON of Kingston-upon-Hull, Yorkshire, England after moving to
Hull from the County of Northumberland. Says
his daughter was MRS. BERRYMAN (deposition 1755). JOHN NEWTON'S wife was MADAM ROSE NEWTON, "
aged eighty years or thereabouts," dated July
8, 1709, he is called "Master and Mariner". JOHN NEWTON, JR. married MARY, daughter of COL. ISAAC
ALLERTON. They moved early to Stafford
County, Virginia (1689-1693)."
Notes from Vol WFT Vol #4- #2696- "John Newton came to Virginia in 1660.
He held large estates in Carleton and in Virginia. The Newtons trace their lineage back almost 2000 years to
Prince Caractacus, who became King Caradoc of Britain in A. D. 53. In this line one of their ancestors distinguished
himself in the Crusade under
Richard the Lionhearted against the Saraceus at the Battle of Escalon in 1192. Later another, Sir John Newton,
was sword-bearer to Richard I, King of
England."
