Charles Christian Jouvenal Altman

FIFTH GENERATION

28. Charles Christian Jouvenal ALTMAN was born on 23 Oct 1833 in Alsace Lorraine, Germany.61  Note: When I talked with Jean Cabill prior to her sending me the hard copy of information, she gave me the information he was born in Alsace Lorraine, Germany.  Hard copy only indicated Germany.  He was a member in 1854 of Concordia Lutheran Church, Washington, DC.61  Charles and family lived at 11th west and K north, Washington, DC in 1862.61  He was a Grocer between 1862 and 1882 in Washington, DC.61   His home was listed as the same location as where he worked, as a Grocer in the years 1863 to 1866, and then later in 1874 to 1878, indicating to me that he owned the store.  He resided at 593 N north, Washington, DC in 1863/64.61  He resided at North corner Madison, Washington, DC in 1866.61  He resided at 10th west near U north, Washington, DC between 1867 and 1869.61

He was naturalized on 31 May 1870 in Washington, DC. Record Group (RG) 21, Records of the District Courts of the United States, District of Columbia, Entry 97, Naturalization index, 1802 - 1909, Charles Altmann; May 31, 1870.  Charles Altmann in RG 21, Entry 101, Naturalization Records, 1866 - 1906, and Entry 105, Declarations of Intention, with Supporting Papers, 1802 - 1903.

Note: In my Grandmother's (Addie E. C. Altman) picture box  was a picture of a Henry E. Gross & an Elizabeth A. Gross, which at first I thought to be my Great Grandmother's brother Henry and perhaps a first wife. The marriage which took place in Washington, DC at the Concordia Lutheran Church, between a Henry E. Gross and an Elizabeth A. Gross, made me realize that this was not Henry Gross, brother of Lena Gross Altman, but the brother of Wilhelmina Gross that married Charles Altman.

Carl or Charles Altmann, father of Wm. John Altmann, may have had a middle name of Christian, as he is listed on one baptismal record of his son, Carl or Charles.

He was married to Wilhelmine GROSS on 12 Nov 1854 in the Concordia Lutheran Church, Washington, DC.25 From the book, "District of Columbia Marriage Licenses, register 1, 1811-1858", Charles ALTMANN (sic) and Wielhilmine GROS (sic) on 11 Nov 1854. Note: this date is one day prior to information from church. Most likely the date of the License.
