One hundred -t~hirty years later religious persecution continued. Then, in 1659, the council of Berne in Switzerland ordered the exiLe of all persons who would not conform to the State religion, Their property was to fa~l to the State. Every year many were banished and in 1671, seven hundred people Were driven out of the country, many gOnate. Alsace and the Palatinate are parts ~f Germany and located north of Switzerland along the Rhine river, The Anabaptist were welcomed into Germany as they were good farmers who could help improve the land after.the ravages of repeated WarS . The Hershbergers of Basel, Switzerland who were menibers of the Anabaptists faith, most likely migrated to the Palatinate with others of their faith who had been exiled. Evidence is found of a Martin Hirschberger in the Palatinate in 1717, a Christian Hirschberger at Eppstein in 1738 and again in 1752 and 1753 and a Jacob Herschberger n Eppstein in 1759. The relationship of these men to our family is still being studied, -------------------------------------------------- HARSHBERGER THE ANCESTORS OF EVE HARSHBERGER The ancestors of Eve Harshberger, like the Summys, were Mennonites exiled from Switzerland, likely from Basel. They migrated to The German Palitinate or Alsace and eventually to The Americas via Rotterdam, in The Netherlands. Christian Herzberger, with his wife, Barbara and two children, Peter and Anne, arrived at the port of Philadelphia October 8, 1737 on the English Ship, Charming Nancy. Upon arrival, the Hertzberger party, with others, walked to the Philadelphia Courthouse. It was required that all arriving foreigners take an oath there, declaring allegiance to the English King and fidelity to the Proprietor of the Province. Through three land warrents obtained over a period between 1745 and 1755, Christian Hershberger accumulated 219 acres located on Molasses Hill in Berne Twp., Berks county, Pa This land was conveyed to his two sons, Peter and Christian Jr., in 1770. Peter signed over his half to Christian Jr. and moved to Dauphin County. Christian Hershberger Jr. and his wife Magdelena farmed this property until about 1815. Then they split the property in two and sold them to their sons Peter and David. Three or four years later the two sons sold their respective properties out of the family and moved and settled in Mifflin County, Pa. The brothers of Peter and David also moved and settled in Somerset Co., Pa. Benjamin, Daniel, Henry and Abraham went to Conemaugh Twp. and John, Christian III, and Jacob went to Elk Lick Twp. Christian III had nine children as enumerated by Abraham Summy in a letter to his niece. One of these offspring was Eve Harshberger, wife of Christian Summy, and mother of Abraham Summy. Elk Lick Township was and is a center of Amish families, who include descendants of Michael Summy and the Harshberger families. The family history of the Hershbergers was found in a manuscript at the Somerset Historical Society. The connection to the Summy Family, and thus the Stairs Family, is given in a personal letter written by Abraham Summy to his niece ( daughter of Fannie Kaufman). ---------------------------------------------------------- 30 Apr 1996 Descendants of: CHRISTIAN HERTZBERGER 1 CHRISTIAN HERTZBERGER b. _____ d.
