LEPLEY MICHAEL LÄPPLE The first generation Lepley Family came from Diefenbach, Germany sometime between 1748 and 1775 and settled in Eastern Pennsylvania . Diefenbach is a small village east of Karlsruhe and Bretten in Wurttemburg. Records there list the births (and four infant deaths) of the children of Michael and Margretha Ursala Lapple. There were seven girls and four boys: Dorthea, Agnes Dorthea, Johann Michael, Maria Juliane, Euphrosia Catherine, Maria Catherine, Johann Jacob, Johann George, Margaretha, Maria Barbara and Johann Adam. Records found in the bible of the third generation Adam Lepley say that the family arriving in America included three sons, Michael, Jacob and Adam, and two daughters. The son Michael had two sons by his first wife and probably four children by his second wife. Michael was in the militia and was killed by indians near Fort Freeland; he was only 41 years old. There are records at Sunury, Northumberland County, Pennsylvania submitted by his wife, Mary Anne, applying for financial assistance after his death. Guardians were appointed for their children Jacob, Elizabeth, Christina, John, Mary and Michael Leipley. The son Jacob Lepley lived and died in Northumberland County, Pennsylvania. His will, probated in July 1815 in Union County (originally part of Northumberland), names his wife Catherine and the following children: Jacob, Henry, Anthony, Margaret Kern, Michael, John, Catherine Kern, Elizabeth, Adam, Christian, and Mary. ADAM LEPLEY (NO 1) According to Lutheran Church records of Frederick, Maryland, Adam Lebele, third son of the late Michael Lebele, and Barbara Bucherin (Bucher), both of Frederick County, were married on the 14th of March 1773. Adam and Barbara first settled in what was then Bedford County, Pennsylvania; it is now Somerset County. They had nine children: Peter, Adam, John Jacob, John Michael, Catherine (Caty), Joseph, George, John, and Elizabeth. In 1806, Adam and Barbara left for Ohio with all their children except for their son, Adam. Their descendants say Adam was both a farmer and a tailor. Barbara was said to be a very dark woman with big black eyes. Some believed she had some Indian blood. This isn't likely considering her marriage in the Frederick Lutheran Church. Adam died, 26 August 1831, in Knox County, Ohio . He was buried in the Bethel Cemetery, Harrison Township, Knox County. Barbara died 17 April 1842. ADAM LEPLEY (NO 2) Adam Lepley, son of Adam and Barbara Lepley, was born 1776 near Willard's Gap, Bedford County, Pennsylvania, now Southampton Township in Somerset County.. He served as Justice of the Peace for many years after his first appointment in 1809 by the Governor of Pennsylvania. He built a stone house which still stands. He was a blacksmith, and according to the 1810 tax list, owned a still. He married Elizabeth Horn (born 1780), daughter of Valentine Horn, on April 8, 1798. They had ten children: Daniel, Jacob, Valentine, Johanna, Catherine, Susannah, Joseph, Barbara, Adam, and Harmon Horn. Adam died in 1831, Elizabeth died in 1862. They are both buried in the family cemetery in Southampton Township, Somerset County, Pennsylvania. Daniel Lepley 1 Daniel Lepley Daniel Lepley was born 12 August 1799 in Southampton Township, Somerset County, Pennsylvania. He married Elizabeth Beal (born 16 January 1807), daughter of John Beal and Mary Magdalena Korns Beal. They had ten children: Daniel, Louisa, Nancy, Matilda, Adam Charles, Christina, Mary, Samuel, Diana, and Ellen. Elizabeth died 5 July 1874 and Daniel married a second time to the widow Elizabeth Wilhelm Hoffmeyer. There were no children by this second marriage. Daniel lived in Larimer Twp where he operated a grist mill and a saw mill. He served as a Justice of the Peace from 1840 through 1845. He was a County Commissioner in 1847 and later. He is said to have carried money home from the State Capital at Harrisburg to build the Plank Road from Cumberland to Mt. Pleasant. Since he owned a saw mill, he no doubt sold planks to the Road Company. Elizabeth Beal Lepley 1 Margurite Lepley Cockley has the New Testament Bible that belonged to Daniel. It is a rare edition of the Goeb New Teatament printed in Somerset in 1814. Out of three sons, only one lived to carry on the Lepley name. The son Daniel died at age 13 either from blood poisoning or smallpox. The son Samuel was taught school for some years, first in Somerset and Bedford Counties and then in the State of Illinois. There he enlisted in Co. D, 1st Ill. Art. When moving on Vicksburg he was taken ill and sent to the hospital at St. Louis, where after his recovery he was assigned as a clerk in Gen Shofield's headquarters. He later rejoined his command where he was again taken sick. He was sent to Jeffersn Barracks where he soon thereafter died and was interred. Adam C. Lepley, his brother, traveled there and brought back a few of his possessions in an old suitcase. Margurite Lepley Cockley has a letter case and wallet of Samuels brought back by Adam.. Daniel lived his last years at the home of his son Adam. He died there March 7, 1892. He was buried with his first wife, Elizabeth, at the White Oak Cemetery in Larimer Township, Somerset County, Pennsylvania. Adam Charles Lepley Adam Lepley was baptised at Wellersburg Union Church (Lutheran and Reformed) on April 03, 1836. When young, Adam worked in his father's saw mill and hauled lumber throughout the year. So he got very little formal education. He, however became quite learned over the years through reading. He served many years as Justice of Peace and one term as County Commissioner. For many years Adam lived on a farm in Larimer Twp. After his second marriage, he moved to Elk Lick Twp. where he took over the farm of his wife's father, Jacob Hershberger. Here, he had a gristmill, saw mill and a small coal mine. He was Justice of the Peace and held just about all the Township Offices. He was a charter member of the Meyersdale Masonic Lodge. He filled nearly all the chairs in the Blue Lodge. His lodge brothers took part in his funeral. He was a lifelong Republican with very strong opinions about public affairs. He was baptized in the Luteran Church but joined the Reformed Church after his first marriage. He served as Elder here for many years. A memorial window given by the family is near the family pew. Ned Groff remembers his grandfather as being stern and humorless. His granddad paid him 15 cents every Saturday to clean out his spitoon in the old home. It was a common sight to see tobacco spittle on his granddads goatee. In Grandad's last years when he was in the hospital, he paid his grandson Charles 10 cents to bring his morning Pittsburgh paper. The three cents left over was immediately spent at Mountain's Drug Store and Soda Fountain. 6 HARVEY W GROFF b. ABT 1872 m. MAUDE DEAN GROFF 7 ELEANOR GROFF b. _____ d. 1995 m. JAMES M.
