MONTICUE THE ANCESTORS OF SUSANNAH MONTICUE Abraham Summy's first wife Susannah, mother of Elizabeth O. Stairs, was a Monticue. The Henry Monticue family of Donegal appears in several transactions with the Family of George and Elizabeth Stairs. It has not been confirmed, but it is likely that Henry was a brother of Susannah, though Susannah was 15 to 17 years younger. First, the daughter of Henry, Sarah, is mentioned in Clara Belle Stairs' History of the Edward Stairs Family and is described as a cousin to Edward. If assumptions are correct, Sarah was a second cousin to Edward. The episode described in Clara Belle's history is the marriage of Edward to Harriet(Hattie) Walker. Sarah Monticue was the second wife of George Walker and stepmother to Hattie. A receipt for compensation from the estate of George Stairs to the Walker Heirs, show that the Walkers lived in Jones Mill, Donegal Twp. Second, Henry Monticue=s Heirs are mentioned as claimants in the settlement of George Stair=s Estate. The heirs appearing in probate records of George Stairs include Sarah, Edward, Sylvester, and Nathan. And last, mentioned earlier, George Stairs bought property of Henry Monticue on public sale. What more is known of the Monticues is very sketchy. Based on the 1850 through 1880 censuses and Donegal tax records, it is believed Henry Monticue was born about 1815 in Maryland and died sometime before 1890 in Donegal. His wife Louise or Louisa was born about 1822. They had at least seven children: Edward born about 1843, Sarah born about 1844, Elizabeth born about 1846, Rosanna born about 1849, Sylvester born about 1853, Carson born about 1859 and Nathan born about 1861. There is a Benjamin Monticue listed in the 1850 Donegal census, who if related, would most likely be a brother to Henry and Susannah. He was born about 1826. One other Monticue can be found in the earlier Donegal Township records. A Nathan Monticue appears in the 1830 Census with a household of nine members including him, his wife and seven children ranging from less than one to between 16 and 26. He is listed on the Donegal tax records from 1834 through 1837 (no records were kept before 1834). He apparently moved on then because he shows up again in the 1850 census for Wayne Township in Lawrence County, Pennsylvania. In this census he lists his birthplace as Maryland and his age as 75. Thus, Nathan was born about 1885. His wife was born three years earlier. Working with these census records, it can be deduced that Nathan had eight or nine children born between the years of 1815 and 1830, and that Henry and Susannah were two of these children. Nathan Monticue is found in the 1810 census for Caroline County, located near the Eastern Border of Maryland. In that census, family member names are not listed, only the count of people in various age groups. The Caroline County marriage records show Nathan marrying Elizabeth Boon February 28, 1809. According to the census, Nathan and his wife had a boy and a girl under the age of ten, and a boy between ten and sixteen in their household. Considering Nathan's age and his being married only one year earlier. It is not likely the older boy was an offspring of either Nathan or Elizabeth. The other children were likely one or two or less. Four other Mountecue Households are listed in the Caroline Co. censuses from 1790 to 1820, John Sr, John Jr., William Sr. and William Jr. From the age of respective children listed, any one of these men, except William Jr., could have been the father of Nathan. There were a number of Monticues living in Caroline County, Md. (part of Queen Anne's County before 1774) during the 18th century and the first half of the 19th century. They all lived in and around the upper stretches of the Choptank River near the Delaware Border. This is in the northern part of the county, around the town now called Goldsboro. In researching the family, it was possible to connect only a few into a comprehensive family tree. The earliest discovered was a William Mounteque who was born before 1710 in Colonial Maryland. He was most certainly of English descent and he belonged to the English Anglian Church. More specifically he was a member of St. Luke=s Parish in Queen Anne's County. In 1727, William married Ann Jadwin, daughter of a local planter Jeremiah Jadwin and his wife Isabelle. In 1738, William purchased a 140-acre portion of a larger 1000 acre tract called "Ratcliffe.@ This was originally laid out for a town named Old Town which in current times became Goldsboro. All land in those days was given quaint names like "Forrest Range,@ "Montague's Luck,@ etc. And in those days each piece of land had a rent attached to them which was paid to the English Governor of Maryland who was a Calvert or Lord Baltimore. The rent roles all referred to these land names. These rents were discontinued and the English Church Parishes faded away after the Revolutionary war. Parts of William's 140 acres were handed done to his eldest sons. Fifty acres each went to Jadwin and John. When Jadwin died, John inherited his brother's portion. John's son William inherited these two portions. They were finally sold out of the family in 1819. Whether Nathan was a direct descendant of this family line is not known. In the only Maryland census that Nathan can be found (Caroline County 1810), a John and William are the only other Monticues listed. If this is the William Jr. mentioned earlier, then the strongest likelihood is that John Jr. is Nathan's father. A quasi dependancy chart titled AThe Maryland Monticues@ list all the names of Monticues found in Caroline and Queen Annes County records and their relationships where it could be established. CREDITS AND NOTES 1. Information on the Maryland Monticues was gotten from Caroline County records in Denton, Maryland and in The Maryland Hall of Records in Annapolis. 2. The relationships of Elizabeth O. Stairs, her mother Susannah Monticue, Henry Monticue and Nathan were derived from Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania records. 3. A paper written by Mrs. Pat Ellingson of Madison, Wisconsin provided census information on Nathan Monticue in Lawrence County, Pennsylvania plus information on second and third generation descendants of Henry Monticue. Reverend James Monticue, one of these descendants and minister of The Church of God in Kingwood, Pennsylvania, provided a copy of the paper. Mrs. Ellingson had surveyed several living descendants at the time and collected the family statistics. The paper also included some information used in the Maryland Monticue Tree. _______________________________________________________________ THE EARLY MARYLAND MONTICUES The following named people all lived in what is now Caroline County, Maryland on the Eastern Shore adjacent to the State of Delaware. You will find the dummy names: "origin search" and "connection unknown" where relationships could not be established. It is likely that names were duplicated in some cases where different events occurred and again relationships could not determined. This information was collected in a search for the ancestors of Nathan Monticue who settled in Donegal Township, Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania. The monticue name seems to have died out in this Maryland County during the late 1800s. 1 ORIGIN SEARCH 2 WILLIAM (1a) MOUNTAGUE Immigrated via Barbados between 1654 and 1663. There is a 2nd man over 45 in his household in 1810. If we are correct in assuming John Sr was the brother of Jadwin, John Jr is not the son of John Sr. 4 WILLIAM SR MONTICUE b. There are 3 men between 26 and 44 in the household and apparently no wife in 1810.
