After some discussion of the reported lease and money due the hei rs , an Andrew Dye association was formed to seek the heirs rightful inheritance a nd Thomas L Dye of New Arlisle was elected its president . A second reuni on was held in Pleasant Hill in 1905 reportedly with 500 in attendance b ut nothing approaching a inheritance ever developed

Among the fathers of Miami County, Mr. Stephen Dye stands prominent, who d ied September 14th, 1851, in Shelby County, Ohio. Mr. Dye was the s on of Andrew and Sarah Dye. He was born in Maryland, but soon removed to P enn. Thence he emigrated with his father to Kentucky, what was then consid ered to be in the far west. Called to the defense of the frontier settlem ents against the depredations of the Indians, he became acquainted with t he fertile valley of western Ohio. Invited by such a country, and the adv antages of a free, over a slave state, he removed and was among the fir st settlers of Miami County. An idea of his judgment and forecast in prop erty matters, may be gathered from this step in his history. He selected 4 00 acres on the rich bottoms of the Miami River, near the center of the c ounty, where the location added essentially to the value of the lands, un surpassed in inherent worth. On this chosen spot, but 2 1/2 miles from t he county seat, he lived until 70 years old. At that advanced age, wi th a new wife, he removed to Shelby County, and commenced anew the cultiva tion of a farm and the support of a wife and a rising family. This is t he more remarkable as he had made a disposition of the greater part of h is estate and had been residing for several years with the son of his choi ce, upon the home farm. Here he remained upon a small farm at Port Jeffers on till the spring 1851, when his fourth and last wife died, leaving two c hildren the youngest about six weeks old. He then retired from the farm a nd made his home with Rev. Jacob Dye, residing in the neighborhood - whe re he died in the Fall of the same year, having filled up the full measu re of a long life and good old age, being over 80 years old.
Mr. Dye, though not rich, acquired an estate which enabled him to give a l arge family a good start in the world, reserving to himself a fair suppo rt in this old age. The property which he was managing and held in his han ds up to his death amounted to about $5,000.
We had the pleasure of visiting him at his residence, in the Winter of ' 49 and '50. We found him on a farm of thirty acres, with a convenient hou se and out buildings, a comparatively young wife and two little childre n, having no help in or out of doors. He was cheerful and happy and sa id he could manage his farm very well, only complaining that it made him r ather "leg weary" to follow the plow. He thought he would be obliged to hi re that done from that time on. Mr. Dye was much esteemed in this county for many years as a man and a Chr istian. He served the county as sheriff eight years; two periods of two te rms each, the law forbidding one to hold the office more than two consecut ive terms in connection. He also represented his county in the legislatu re of the state.
In politics Mr. Dye was a Democrat. and never to the day of his death----- -------(missing).; In religion he was a Baptist and held an honorable stan ding in that church for 46 years, dying in full fellowship, and in the tri umph of living and abiding faith in the great redeemer. He retained his re ason up to the last moments of his life, and expressed a firm confiden ce in the great redeemer, and in him alone put his trust. At the day of h is death, this patriarch could count in the line of his posterity 19 child ren, 114 grandchildren, 148 great-grandchildren. Total: 281.

In Stephen's will, dated 4 Sep 1851, his farm and proceeds from the sa le of sixty acres was bequeathed to his two minor children, Samuel Alexand er and Margaret. His house and lot in Port Jefferson, all his personal pro perties, monies and accounts were to be equally divided and paid over to t he balance of his heirs after all debts were paid. His son Jacob J., was a ppointed executor of his father's estate; and said Jacob, according to h is father's wishes was to 'raise and school my two youngest children His s ons, Fielding and Madison, were appointed guardians of the two minor child ren. Jacob was also to receive one half of Stephen's Bounty land, the bala nce to be equally divided among his heirs. Included with the will is a li st of the goods and chattels sold at the sale of Stephen Dye, deceased, so ld by Jacob J. Dye, Executor, 6 Oct 1851. The will is recorded in Shelby C ounty Will Book Volume 1, p. 184.

Benjamin Dye (1779-1843) was married in Pennsylvania at age 19 and: "... a bout 1799 he started with his wife for Ohio. Their oldest child was born t hat winter near the present site of the city of Cincinnati. Mr. Dye and h is wife make their way down the Ohio River on a flat-boat from Pittsbur g, bringing with them a feather-bed, one horse and a fine rifle. Arrivi ng in Cincinnati, an old French Indian trader and trapper offered Mr. D ye a large tract of land which is now in the heart of Cincinnati in exchan ge for his rifle, but Mr. Dye refused the offer. However, he remained f or some time near Cincinnati and there built a log cabin, in which the fam ily lived in true pioneer style. Subsequently, he removed to what is now E lizabeth Township, Miami County, where he built a little home on a tra ct of wild land, which he afterward transformed into a good farm. "

The bequest portion stated: ". .. First, That the expenses of my Last sickness and funeral shall be pa id first. Second That all my just debts, if any I owe are to paid next. Th ird-That my clothing lace & bedding are to equally divided amongst my Daug hters excepting Clarissa. Fourth-That all my grand Daughters named for m e, excepting Frances Blue and in her stead Sarah Blue are each to have t en dollars. Fifth- That the remainder of the money belongi ng to me is to be equally divided among my children excepting Thomas Jr, J ames & Samuel & Phebe Mary & Clarissa and Rachel. Sixth-That I hereby cons titute & appoint my son Andrew to be Executor of this my Last Will & Testa ment confirming & establishing it & revoking all others. ....." Thomas was born 26 Dec 1770.(185) Thomas was the son of William Sayres a nd Mary Fithian. Thomas died 15 Jul 1844 in Miami County, OH, at 73 yea rs of age.(186) According to a book "The Tenmile Country and Its Pioneer F amilies," he and Frances had 17 children. (10 daughters, 6 sons, 1 of unkn own gender.) Apparently, the original copy of his will was lost or destroy ed and there was disagreement that a copy of it was valid. A jury was empa neled and found that the copy was in fact the Last Will & Testament of Tho mas Sayres and it so recorded as such in a session of the Court of Comm on Pleas on 24 Mar 1846. The bequest portion of the will stated: ".... It em first I give and bequeath to my beloved wife Frances Sayers in li eu of her dower, one horse, one cow, one Bureau, one clock & two beds; a nd I also will to Ira & Clarissa Drake the farm on which we now live and n ine acres which ... bought of Geo. Green & .... and he is to give to my be loved wife Frances Sayres the third of the hay and grain, while she live s; and I also will to all my living daughters except Clarissa Drake, one h undred dollars and to my deceased daughters heirs, I will to Ann Lee's hei rs forty dollars, to ....Green's heirs forty dollars, to Rachal Blue's dau ghter Sarah forty dollars, and to the balance of her heirs forty dollar s, and I also will to my son William Sayres the farm on which he now liv es in Elizabeth Township Miami County, and thirty dollars to my son Jam es Sayres and my just debts to be paid and the balance of my proper ty to be sold, and after paying all my debts ..... equally divided betwe en my heirs except my deceased daughter's sons & those that have no heir s. And I appoint Andrew D. Sayres & Nyer S. Yates my Executors." Charl es J. Beckman's account: Frances Dye Sayers (1777-1853) was married at a ge 18 and had five children when she and her husband reportedly left Penns ylvania in 1808. In Miami County they settled in Staunton Township, near h er father and brothers on the east side of the river. She was the moth er of 17 children and lived to age 76. ........

WILLIAM DYE was born in Miami County, Ohio, April 15, 1807, and is the s on of Benjamin and Elizabeth (Jackson) Dye, both natives of Pennsylvani a. The father was born December 27, 1779, and the mother June 10, 1776, a nd they were married in Greene County, Penn. Mrs. Dye died about the ye ar 1815; Mr. Dye then married his brother's widow, and died in June, 1842. He was the f ather of fifteen children - ten by his first, and five by his second wif e. Among them were ten sons - Stephen, Vincent, Andrew, James M., Willia m, Benjamin, John, Jeremiah, Horatio and Basil. April 6, 1826, William D ye married Nancy Meek, who was born in Fairfield County, Oho, September 1 5, 1808. This lady died in Miami County, Ohio, January 12, 1843. In the sp ring of 1846, Mr. Dye came to Pulaski County, and settled on the farm of 1 60 acres where he now lives, having in the meantime lived a few years in Tipp ecanoe County, Ind. March 18, 1847, he married Emily Hollenback, who di ed November 17, 1860; December 4, 1861, he married Nancy McDonald, who di ed March 9, 1872; September 18, 1873, he married Mrs. Elzira Shepard. He has had born to him fourteen children as follows: Vincent, Sarah, Jackso n, John, Basil, Benjamin, Eli and Horatio by his first wife; William, Emes ila and an infant daughter, who died unnamed, by his second wife; Jam es M. and Emily by his third, and Edward R. by his fourth wife. He has ser ved as Justice of the Peace a number of years, and he and wife are membe rs of the United Brethren Church.
JOHN MARSH (deceased) ; born in the State of Virginia Nov. 2, 1794; beca me a resident of Clark Co. about 1818, being one among the pioneers of t he county, locating here at the same time as others of those honored fathe rs who endured so many hardships, and laid the foundations and performed t he primary work for this prosperous and growing county. Mr. Marsh was marr ied, Feb. 28, 1833, to Maria, daughter of Benjamin and Elizabeth Dye, w ho were among the first settlers of Miami Co.; locating there about the sa me time of the Knoops, in 1798. Maria was born April 7, 1812. By this uni on they had three children-Nathan, Mary Jane and John D. Mr. Marsh died Ju ne 4, 1837, aged about 43 years. He was a remarkably industrious. energet ic and successful business man, commencing in life with no capital, earni ng his first few dollars by his daily labor, grubbing and clearing up la nd in this, then almost unbroken wilderness; he was industrious and econom ical, and day by day and year after year he increased his capital, boug ht a farm, and from time to time added more land by purchase, became an ex tensive stock-dealer, and although he lived to only middle age, yet he bec ame owner of 800 acres of land, and left his widow and family with a go od competency. She remained upon the home place, with her children, who we re then quite small ; and though a great charge and care devolved upon he r, yet she was competent for the occasion, and her affairs were careful ly managed and her children grew to maturity. Mrs. Marsh married for her s econd husband James Jones, who was born March 28, 1800, a native of Pennsy lvania, their marriage being celebrated the 31st day of January, 183 9. By this union they had six children, five now survive-Malinda, Benjam in (deceased), Werden, Thomas, Elizabeth and Walter. After their marriag e, Mr. Jones took charge of the farm of his wife, where he remained till h is death. which occurred Nov. 6, 1852. Mrs. Jones still remains upon the h ome place, where she has now resided nearly forty-eight years; and since M r. Jones' death has, with the help of her sons, carried on the farm. In th is brief sketch we have a history of some of the pioneers whose lives a nd labors may be read with h great interest and profit by their children 's children, long after the present generation has passed away.

Evilsizer,Leonard Morris - was born in Kanawha County, Virginia, September 2, 1816. He gains a livelihood by farming. Steeled in Jay County in 183 7, and married Frances Dye, in Knox Twp., Jay Col, April 4, 1839. She is the daughter of Minor and Deliah (Long) Dye, who were born in Greene County, Pennsylvania, at which place the death of Mr. Dye occurred. Mrs. Dye met her death in Jay County, Indiana. Mr. Evelsizer is the father of eleven children, named respectively: Eliza Ann, born May 30, 1840, died in Miami Co ., Ohio March 30, 1842; Matilda Jane, Nov. 29, 1841, died in Miami Co., March 25, 1842; Minor, born Feb. 4, 1843, resides in Jay Co., Indiana. Priscilla, born Aug. 19, 1845, resides in Montgomery County,Indiana; James, born and died July 15, 1848; Margaret born June 15, 1849, is a resident of Jay County; Louis M. born July 16, 1851, resides in Jay County; Mary Frances, born August 19, 1854, is a resident of Montgomery County, Indiana; Albert W., born Sept. 19, 1856, resides in Jay County, Indiana; Sarah Maria, born September 11, 1858, is a resident of Jay County Kipher, born July 2, 1861, died Oct. 14, 1865. Henry and Elizabeth (Idle) Evilsizer, residents of Champaign, County, Ohio, and who were born in Virginia, are the parents of Leonard Evilsizer. His son Minor, fought in the War of 1862. Henry Evilsizer was one of the early settlers. Mail received at Portland. Leonard M. Evilsizer came to this county in 1837. He cleared 200 acres and has owned 1,200 acres in the county; also owns 193 acres in Iowa.

The Courier Central City, Merrick County, Nebraska February 25, 1892 CHAPMAN- Died-Saturday, February 20, 1892, Mrs Barbara Ann Evensizer, in h er 66th year, while visiting her daughter at Walbach. The funeral services were conducted by Rev Samuel Miller from the Baptist Church Mond ay at 2 P.M. after which the remains were followed to the Chapman Cemetery by a large concourse of people and deposited in their last resting place. She leaves and aged husband and three children to mourn her departure.
Parentage not proven but supporting facts indicate probable parentage. Death Cert names father as Benjamin. Many facts support he would be the child of Jacob and Hannah Blue. Originally it was thought he was a son of Henry Jr and Mary J Patterson, however they were in Jay County Indiana in 1840. The proof for this observation for his father being a child of Henry Sr, was is the 1880 census naming Minor Dye as his cousin proving he was the child of one of the sons of Henry Evilsizer Sr. When Hannah Blue died, Jacob farmed out his children and I expect Daniel was one of them. Research shows no Benjamin Evilsizer in any census until Daniel 's brother in 1856. 45 years of my research, 50 years of my parents before me, and 50 years of my grandmother before that has never revealed a Benjamin Evilsizer of this age to be parent. Perhaps it was a middle name.

Mother died around 1840/1841 which explains the children being found scattered in the county.

The Courier, Merrick Co, Neb, Central City James Dye was born Jan 12, 1831 at Elizabeth, Miami Co, Ohio, and died Apr il 13, 1899 at Central City, Neb, aged 68 years, 3 months , 1 day. He w as married march 11, 1855 to Mary Ann Evensizer at Tory, Ohio and lived close to that place until 1880 when they removed to near Chapman Neb., and have since resided in this county. Nine children were born to them, se ven of whom survive, all living in this county excepting one daughter in Ohio. One boy, Joseph H is buried in Ohio and the other, George is buried in the cemetery in Chapman Mr Dye enlisted on the 14th day of Octob er, 1861 at Troy, Ohio and served in Company H of the 44th Ohio infantry until his discharge about June 20,1863 on account of disabilities incur ed in the service of his country. On the 24th day of June, 1881, his left leg was amputated above the knee since which time he has been a constant sufferer from severe pains in that member and other ills incident to his army life. He has been bedfast the greater part of the time for the past eighteen years, only once in while being able to sit up in a chair. He has long been remarkably patient all through his long and severe sufferings. One brother, Mr Benjamin Dye of Grand Island, and one sister,
Mrs Sarah Gilbert of Alliance are all who are left of a family of eight.

Central City Republican Central City, Merrick Co, Nebraska Dec 27, 1902 Mrs. James Dye died in this city Sunday morning of hemorrhage of the lung s. She had long resided in this county and was highly respected. Her hus band, a civil was veteran departed this life several years ago and her chi ldren had all.grown up. The funeral services were held at the residence T uesday morning, the Rev. Bancroft officiating, and the remains were inter red in the cemetery at Chapman. The following detail from the G.A-R. po st acted as pall-bearers: W.H.C. Rice; N.R. Persinger, Jos. Phelps, Jo hn Nhller, Herman Becker and H.C. Martin.
December, 1913 Central City Nebraska Pioneer Resident of Chapman passes away Benjamin Dye was born July 28, 1833 in Miami County, Ohio which was his bo yhood home. On Dec 19, 1853 he was united in marriage to Miss Elizabeth Mc Kee of Miami County. To this union, four children were born, only one, a s on, reaching maturity. Upon the breaking out of the civil war, Mr Dye answ ered his country's call for volunteers and enlisted in the forty-fourth in fantry, Ohio Volunteers, serving throughout the entire four years of the w ar. In 1874 he moved with his family to Chapman, Merrick County, Nebrask a, being one of the early residents of this place. He homesteaded on secti on 34-13-8 and maintained his home there till old age compelled him to ret ire from the farm. During the early history of this community, Mr and M rs Dye were prominent figures, each doing all they could developing a n ew and practically barren country. One of the first self binders introduc ed in his community was owned by Mr Dye and many of the old settlers can t estify to his ability in handling what was then a very cumbersome pie ce of machinery. After leaving the farm Mrs Dye passed away and Mr Dye spe nt his time in different parts of Ohio, North Dakota and Nebraska. Of la te years he has made his home with his niece, Mrs C J Hutchinson of Coleri dge, Neb. It was at this place that he quietly passed into the great beyon d, on Saturday, December 27, 1913 at an age of 80 years, 5 months and 29 d ays. He had not been ill and the end came peacefully as does the clo se of the day to a tired child. The Infinite maker of all infinite thin gs and beings had beckoned to the veteran who had so faithfully and brave ly breasted the storms of life and had usured him into a world of etern al peace. The remains were brought to Chapman, arriving here Monday evenin g. The funeral services were held from the Baptist church Tuesday afternoo n, Rev Edmund Brown being in charge. Interment was made in the family pl ot in the Chapman Cemetery. With the exception of one sister, Mrs Sarah Gi lbert, his entire immediate family had preceded him in death, but he leav es a host of relatives and friends who sadly mourn his loss

Obituary Elizabeth McKee was born March 15, 1836 in Montgomery County, Ohio, and di ed February 17, 1804 [1904] at the soldier's and sailor's home at Grand Is land, Nebraska. Deceased was united in marriage to Benjamin Dye on Decemb er 17, 1853. Mr. and Mrs. Dye emigrated to Nebraska in 1872 where the [th ey] have since resided, moving to the soldier's home about eight years ag o. Mrs. Dye united with the Methodist church in 1873 since which [time] s he has been a faithful'and consistent member. Four children were bo rn to her, all of whom have preceded her to the spirit land. Shortly befo re her death she told her friends that she felt that death was near and th at she was fully prepared to go. The funeral was held from the Chapman Me thodist church, Rev. Ward Morse conducting the services.

Versailles. F. L. Dye, the father of Horatio, was born in Miami Co. Ohio in the year 1808 ; Sarah Lafevere, hi s wife, was born in Miami Co. in the year 1810 ; he came to Darke Co. in th e year 1855, where he continued to reside till the death of his wife, which occurred in September, 1866, after which he sold out and moved to Sydney, Ohio, where he married Ann Easty in the year 1868, and at present resides there. Horatio, the subject of t his sketch, was born in Miami Co. Ohio on the 7th day of April, 1834 ; lived with his parents till he was 23 years old, working on the farm durin g the summer season and attending the distriict school in the winter ; obtai ned a good common-school education. When he was about 23 years old, he boug ht a farm of 82 acres in the same county, and engaged in the cultivation of the soil on his own responsibility, and on the 2nd day of December, 1858, was united in marriage to Miss Lucinda Perry, in Miami Co.; she was born in Mi ami Co. the 16th day of January, 1835 ; he remained on his farm about 8 years, meeting with good success, after which he traded his farm for the Zolinger farm, consisti ng of 72 acres in Miami Co., two miles west of Piqua, Ohio, on the Clayton pi ke ; remained for two years, after which he sold out for $5,000 ; this was the most successful trade of his life ; he bought 74 acres in the same countym northeast of Tippiecanoe, where he moved, remaining there for four years ; sold out for $4,6000, and moved to Versailles, Ohio, and engaged in the tanning business for a period of three years, losing ab out $1,800 ; he then traded the tanyard for a farm of 82 acres, in Wayne Township, Sec. 12 where he has resided ever since. Mr Dye has, in no sens e of the term, been an office-seeker, yet he has had his full share of township offices ; was elected to the office of Supervisor four or five times ; School Director f or three years ; he has taken a very active part in religion, being a memb er of the Presbyterian Church for a period of twenty-three years ; he and his go od and amiable wife have been active members of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church for about four years, living devoted and consistent Christians ; he has held very importane offices in the church ; while in Piqua he was elec ted Elder in the First Presbyterian Church serving three years ; was elected President of the "Union Sabbath School Convention" of Darke Co. for one ye ar, and at present is holding the office of Elder in the Cumberland Presbyteri an Church ; Mr. Dye is strictly a temperate man ; he neither chews nor smokes tobacco ; he has, by the help of his industrious wife, accumulated a considerable amount of property : they have no children. Amoses Perry, th e father of Lucinda, was born in South Carolina in the year 1781, emigrat ed to Miami Co., Ohio when he was 21 years old, where he resided until his death , which occurred in the year 1860 ; Rachel Long, his wife, was born in Kentu cky in the year 1795, she came with her parents to Miami Co., Ohio when she wa s about 1 year old ; she departed this life in the fall of 1865 ; Mr. Perry followed school teaching and was elected to the State Legislature in the y ear 1833 ; Lucinda is an active worker in the cause of religion, as well as a strong advocate of temperance ; also a life member of the American Bible Society. Benjamin dye has been a resident of Morgan County nearly thirty years ,
and during that time has been prosperously pursuing agriculture and i s
one of the prominent farmers of township 15, range 10.. Here he h as a
beautiful home, replete with all the modern conveniences and comforts ,
of a pleasing style of architecture and constructed of brick. His
farm comprises a quarter of section 12, and it is considered one of
the best managed and most desirable in this part of the county.
The subject of this biography was born April 30, 1828, in Miami Co.
Ohio, within five miles of the town of Troy. His father, Vincent Dye ,
was a native of the same county, born in the early days of its
settlement, and after attaining to manhood he undertook the pioneer
task of constructing a farm from the primeval forest in that wild,
sparsely settled part of the country. He took unto him a wife,
Rebecca Swills, and seven children blessed their union, three of whom
are living: our subject; Maria, now Mrs. Harris, of Indiana; Fanny,
(Mrs. Ellidge) of Missouri. In 1832, he moved with his family to
Tippecanoe Co., Ind., and became a pioneer there. In 1859, he made
another move and became a pioneer of still another state, this time
settling in Bates County, Missouri. He was not allowed to remain in
undisturbed possession of his new home very long, but on account of
his strong union and anti-slavery sentiments, which he was too noble
to disguise even for peace and safety, he was driven out of that
county, and returning to Indiana in 1861, he died there in the month
of August, aged sixty-five years, and now lies quietly sleeping his
last sleep near Dayton, Ind. He was a good and true man, whose
honorable, manly course through life merited the highest respect. Hi s
wife stayed in Missouri after his departure to look after their
property, and after the close of the war came to Illinois and made he r
home with our subject till she closed her eyes in death at the age of
sixty-five years.
Our subject inherited from his worthy parents many sterling traits of
character that have made him a strong, manly man, true to those high
principles that they inculcated by precept and example. He was a
child of four years when he was taken from the beautiful scenes of
his early home to Indiana, and there, near Dayton, seven miles from
LaFayette, where his father took up new land, he grew to manhood,
obtaining a good, practical education in the common schools. After
his schooldays were over he engaged with his father in farming till h e
attained his majority, when he worked on a farm for some one else at
first, and after a little had a farm of his own. He began with eight y
acres of timber land, which he improved into a fine farm before he
left it, and erected a good frame house and other buildings. When he
first started out in life, desiring a companion and helpmate, Mr. Dye
asked Miss Sarah Bugher to share his fate and fortunes with him, and
they were united in marriage in June, 1850. Mrs. Dye is an Indianian
by birth, born about six miles south of Delphi, the county seat of
Carroll County, in 1829, and she lived under the parental roof till
her marriage. Her father, Samuel Bugher, was a native of Miami
County, Ohio, and was there married to Miss Nancy Schaeffer, who was
born near Troy, that state. They moved to Indiana at the same time
that the parents of our subject did, and lived there till after the
marriage of their daughter and our subject, when they went to
Wisconsin. Mr. Schaeffer died there, and his wife also, her death
preceeding his. He was always a farmer and also owned and manag ed a mill.
To Mr. and Mrs. Dye were born twelve children, ten of whom are living ,
four of them born in Indiana, and all have received good school
advantages and are well-bred. Ollie Ann, is now Mrs. Ezra Brown, of
Cowley County, Kansas; Eugene, who lives at home, married Margaret
Miller, and they have two daughters; Belle and Rebecca are at home,
the latter a teacher; Sampson is in Cowley County, Kan.; Nancy and
Rhoda are at home; Lewis is farming with his father; Benjamin, Jr.,
and John are at home.
Mr. Dye became a man of prominence in his Indiana home, although he
avoided politics, and he served in all the School and various Distric t
offices. On the organization of the Republican party he bravely took
sides with it and advocated its principles, although he knew that in
doing so in that part of the country where he was then residing his
very life was in danger, the pro-slavery element predominating and th e
Southern sentiment very strong. He incurred the hatred and animosity
of his neighbors, who called him a "black abolitionist," and pitched
on to him and he barely escaped having serious trouble. He was a
member of the militia or home guards, Company B, 10th Ind. and
accompanied his regiment to Virginia at the time of the call for "100
day" volunteers. Prior to going on this expedition Mr. Dye deemed it
expedient so sell his property in Indiana, and did so in the spring o f
1861. But he did not come to Morgan County, this state, till the fall
of 1861, when he bought his present farm, the land of which was
improved to some extent, and he has ever since been a valued resident
of this township. His removal to this place was made with teams and
it took ten days to accomplish the journey.
In the twenty-eight years that have elapsed since our subject came
here to swell among the kindly, hospitable people of this township, h e
has shown himself an open-hearted, generous, public spirited citizen,
one who is ever on the side of the right, ready to succor the needy
and unfortunate, and who has at heart the good of the community. He
and his wife are highly esteemed in social circles, and for a time he
was a member of the I.O.O.F.
Grayson Dye, farmer; P. O. Piqua; a descendant of the old Dye family, of p ioneer history; was born in Miami County January 11, 1841, and is the s on of James M. and Letty (Cecil) Dye; he was also born in Miami County, a nd she in Virginia, but came with her parents to Ohio when just a small ch ild. They were united in marriage March 3, 1825 - the day before that up on which Andrew Jackson was inaugurated as President of the United State s; by this union, they had thirteen children, of whom six are now livin g, viz., Thomas C., Joseph C., Roswell S., Elizabeth, Grayson and Nan cy J. The grandfather, Benjamin, was born in Pennsylvania, but left the re and came to Cincinnati in 1798; thence to Miami County in 1799, being o ne of the earliest of the pioneers; they located upon the same section whi ch Grayson, the grandson, now lives, and on the very road which was cut o ut through the then wilderness, during the War of 1812, by General Wayn e; "these were the days that tried men's souls." The father, James M., a nd the son, Grayson, both were born on the same section, making a continu ed residence of the Dye family upon the same land of eighty-one years. Gra yson Dye was united in marriage October 12, 1864, with Louisa Sheafer, dau ghter of Eckert and Rachel Sheafer, who were born in Pennsylvania and ca me to Ohio in 1848. By this union, they have had three children, viz., Tho mas A., Pamelia, James M. Mr. Dye owns a good farm of 199 acres of excelle nt bottom land, and also has charge of his mother's farm of 220 acres, giv ing him the superintendency of 419 acres of land; he is largely engag ed in the raising of stock, having 700 sheep and the best blooded stoc k; he is an active thorough-going farmer, and believes that successful far ming requires knowledge and scientific attainments
HORATIO DYE was born in Miami County, Ohio, December 3, 1842, and is a son of William and Nancy Dye, who came to this county many years ago. In August, 1862, Horatio Dye enlisted in Company B, Eighty-seventh Indiana Volunteer Infantry, and was discharged at Madison, Ind., in May, 1865. Returning home on a furlough, he was married, March 24, 1864, to Nancy J. Thompson, who was born in Logan County, Ohio, June 2, 1843. To this union there have been born ten children - William S., Eli S. (deceased), Emma R. , Mary E. (deceased), Nettie M., James L. (deceased), Jesse N. (deceased), Ina V., Nellie M. and an infant daughter not named. In 1880, Mr. Dye purchased and moved upon the farm where he now resides, and which comprise s 206 acres.

Nathan MARSH, farmer, and stock-dealer; P. O. Springfield. Born Dec. 17, 1 833, on the farm where he now lives and has always resided; is a son of Jo hn and Maria MARSH, whose history appears in full in sketch of John MAR SH (deceased), in this work. Our subject, being a mere child about 3 yea rs of age at the death of his father, was left in the care of his mothe r, by whom he was raised, and under whose watchful care he grew to maturit y. Was married Nov. 9, 1859, to Catherine, daugh-ter of Jacob and Elean or YEAZELL, whose history also appears in this volume. By this union th ey have seven children - Laura L. (now Mrs. HOYT, of New York City); Lizz ie D., Richard D., Nathan, Mary, John and Jessie. Mr. MARSH has followed t he foot-steps of his father in his occupation as a farmer and stock-deale r. Belonging to one of the old pioneer families of notoriety and prominenc e, Mr. MARSH has always taken a front rank in his community; has held ma ny local offices, such as Township Trustee, School Director, etc.; the lat ter office he has filled for twenty years.

Minor has been a tough person to keep the records straight. With the recor ds I have, I have been able to put together some facts. We know by marria ge records and cemetery records that he first married Mary Manson. He enli sted in the Civil war one week later, and she died four months later whi le he was away. So we know there were no children of this marriage. Wh en he returned from the war he married Mary Sigler and nine months late r, son William Lewis was born. Mary died in 1870. In 1873 he married Ma ry Jane Rider. It is not known how long he stayed married to her, but we k now there were two children born at least. Since there was a gap in birt hs between 1875 and 1881, we feel he must have met Elitha Jane Barber a nd had children by her. There is no marriage record, but birth records na me mother. When she died in 1890, Minor sent his children, which I assu me to be hers, to the Orphans home. He then remarried one last time. Somew here in this time unknown is a son born named Minor, as in 1899 after Mino r's death, there is a marriage recorded in Jay County. Until as such ti me the younger Minor is found in a census, or if the marriage record was 1 890 instead of 1899, then this is a mystery. If a child Minor existe d, he was not a child sent to the orphan's home in Center, Rush County, IN . If the 1899 date should really be 1890, then Minor married his st ep daughter, Esther Jane Brandenburg five days after the death of her moth er. I have ordered the Veterans records.

Mr McCartney stayed the judgeme nt with W H Hrkins as bail for three months. He has ten days in which to t ake the appeal.

I am fortunate to have a photo (tin type) of both my g-grandmother and gra ndfather Vincent--what handsome people they were. My mother (deceased) le ft to me a photo album (surely of Vincents and Evilsizers) and I don't kn ow anybody in it --My g-grandparents names were on theirs and then the re is one that says Freddy (in a dress as a small boy--perhaps a year old ). I was perturbed about having this album with no names and my good husb and said--let's take it out to Idaho where Mother's cousin--Vincent Tibbet ts was living at the time---but you know how it goes--we put it off and Vi ncent passed away. But I was looking thru some of the correspondence betw een this cousin and Mother--and the comment was made between them th at it was a shame that the older generation hadn't put the names on the se pictures---so we could of made that long trip to see Vincent and he wou ld of been unable to identify these pictures either. Oh--well! However-- someone who is doing a study of the Evilsizers could possibly put some nam es with these faces. We went a few years ago to Fairbury, IL to see so me friends and passed a mailbox that said Evilsizer and I have often wonde red it these could possibly be kin. We went a few years ago to Portlan d, IN where Grandma was born and went to the library just browsing to s ee if there could be one or two Evilsizers listed there--it is an odd name --and low and behold--there were hundreds of kinfolk--it didn't take me t oo long to realize that in Portland--it was not an odd name. This Vince nt Tibbetts that I referred to earlier had done an extensive research on t he Vincent and Evilsizers--and he knew which farm was their's and had a va luable history. He had daughters which I hope would have kept their fathe r's papers. Mother--at the time of her death--still had remaining cousi ns living in the Hartford City, IN area--but for some unknown reason--h ad quit corresponding with my Mother. Foundati on is his brother Reason D military service. Only other explanation wou ld be a cousin, but none found with this name. Also, Reason D named o ne of his children Walter. (Maybe for his dead brother.)
History- 196th OH Infantry Organized March 25, 1865, for one years service, under Colonel R. P. Kenne dy, it moved to the Shenandoah Valley. In July, it was ordered to Baltimo re and assigned to duty in the fortifications. The Regiment was mustered o ut September 11, 1865. The officers and men were mostly veterans who had s erved through the war.
From Dyer's Compendium 196th Regiment Infantry. Organized at Camp Chase, Ohio, and mustered in Ma rch 25, 1865. Left State for Winchester, Va., March 26. Assigned to 2nd Br igade, 2nd Provisional Division, Army of the Shenandoah. Duty at Winchest er till July. Moved to Baltimore, Md., and garrison duty there and at Fo rt Delaware till September. Evensizer, R. D. Cando Record
Another old Civil War Veteran has passed on. R D Evensizer has heard the last assembly and has answered to his name at the last roll call, joining his comrades by whose side he fought in 1864. Word was received in Cando Tuesday of his death at St Mary's Hospital at Rochester, Minnesota. The body arrived in Cando Wednesday.The funeral will be held Friday afternoon at two o'clock from the Methodist Church, and will be in charge of the local post of the American Legion. Interment will be made in the IOOF Cemetery. R D Evansizer was born April 19, 1848, near Troy, Ohio and died Sept 11, 1923. He was married August 20, 1873 to Catherine McDonnell, and moved to the state of Nebraska in 1884. They made their home there for eleven years, coming to Cando, North Dakota in 1895. He took up a homestead 8 miles north of Cando and the family lived there for 17 years, after which time they moved to Cando, where he has resided until the time of his death.
He was a veteran of the Civil War and a member of the G.A.R.. In 1864, when sixteen years of age, he enlisted in Co G, the 196th Ohio Voluteer Infantry, with which organization he served until the close of the war. Mr Evensizer leaves to mourn his departure, his wife, two sons, Charles and Walter, one daughter, Mrs Grace Bobst of DuBois Nebraska, and one sister, Mrs J M russell of Cando, besides fourteen grandchildren and one great grandchild. The entire community join with the bereaved in their time of sorrow.

Hyattsville Cemetery, Miami Co, Monroe Twp, Tipp City, OH this cemetery was in disrepair for many years, and several years ago so me boy scout troops and other groups cleaned it up. The stones were move d, and mounted along the inside and outside of cone-shaped mounds. There is an obelisk in the middle of each cone wi th the names of the persons who's stones line the cones. I've attached sma ll, low resolution venisons of the photos I took to this e-mail. Tanzey's stone rests in the middle cone to the rear in the wide an gle photo of the cemetery. I've also included a shot of Tanzey's neighbori ng stones, and a close up toothe stone reads as follows:

Samuel Russell, farmer; P. O. Troy; is the son of Isaac Russell, who was b orn in 1799, and came to Miami Co. as early as 1806. He was married in 182 2, to Tamar Mendenahll, whose parents were natives of North Carolina, in w hich state she was also born; they settled on the farm now owned by John W estlake, and entered a quarter-section adjoining; they had nine childre n, seven are living -- Samuel, our subject, Joseph, Rachel, Rosanna, Olive r, Harriet and Tamar; Ruth and Isaac are dead. Samuel grew up on the far m, and was ever an honest, vigorous lad. At the age of 21, he was wedd ed to Miss Harriet Franklin; they commenced housekeeping, and have alwa ys lived on part of the land originally entered by his father; their child ren are named Louisa, Margaret A., John F., Mary J., Isaac N., Samuel L. a nd Jesse M.; Louisa and John are not living; Mary J. is the wife of Jam es H. Snavely; Margaret wedded Jacob A. Cain. Mr. Russell is one of our su bstantial men, and lives in a style commensurate with his means; his wi fe died Aug 1 1880; she was a noble woman, whose loss will be deeply fel t, not only by her husband and children, but by the entire neighborhood. I saac Russell was wedded to Miss Frances J. Curtis; Mr. Russell was born No v. 17 1822, and his wife Jan 30, 1824, in Warren Co., Ohio; they were a mo del pair and the children should ever feel a pride in having an ancestry w ho were ever foremost in promoting all that pertained to honesty and moral ity.
Samuel Russell, farmer; P.O. Troy. Samuel Russell is a prominent farmer, b orn and raised in Monroe Twp. His father, Isaac Russell, came to the coun ty in 1806, and his mother in 1802. The maiden name of Samuel's mother w as Tamar Mendenhall, a native of North Carolina. Although a farmer, Mr. Ru ssell has done considerable carpenter work; he married Miss Harriet Frankl in in 1843; they were the parents of Louisa, Margaret A., John, Jane, Isaa c, Samuel L., and Jesse M. Louisa and John are not living. Margaret is t he wife of Jacob Cane; Mary J. wedded James H. Snavely; John married Mi ss Elizabeth Cane; Isaac married Miss Joselia Curtis. The home farm compri ses 50 acres, which was improved by X-Mozilla-Status: 0009ublican in polit ics; both himself and wife are members of Monroe Grange. Should we be ask ed where true happiness reigned, the answer would be, in the home of Samnu el Russell and his worthy lady.

It is a fine thing to be permitted to spend one's life at the old homeste ad about which cluster memories and associations which cannot be found els ewhere. Such has been the Privilege of James A Powell, farmer, of Urbana t ownship, Champaign County, who was born on the same farm where he now resi des on November 27, 1856. He is a son of Samuel Smith Powell and Eliza A ( Showers) Powell, the mother a native of Urbana township, this county. T he father was a son of Abram Powell, who was born March 2, 1791 in Kentuc ky and in early pioneer days he came to Champaign County, Ohio, and estab lished the family home in Urbana township, where he devoted his life to fa rming, developing a farm from the virgin soil. He was a soldier in the W ar of 1812. He died at the unusual age of ninety-one years. His wife was M iss Osborn. They were parents of the following children: Samuel Smith, fat her of the subject of this sketch; James, Clay, Miller and Flanders a ll of whom lived and died in Urbana township: Nancy died unmarried; Jo hn is still living in Urbana.
Samuel S Powell, mentioned above, was reared on the home farm in Urbana to wnship and he attended the rural schools there. He burned the brick th at went into the present substantial dwelling on his farm, and he made a ll other necessary improvements. He was a Republican and he served as scho ol director of his district for some time. He gave the ground on whi ch to found Hickory Grove Church, which he also helped build. He was alwa ys very active in church affairs, his home being a favorite meeting pla ce for church people. It was his delight to lavish old-time hospitality a nd he frequently entertained at dinner as many as one hundred gues ts at a time. He was very well known throughout the county and a frie nd to all who knew him. His death occurred in 1886, at the age of sixty-se ven years. He was born July 4, 1819. His wife was born October 22, 1827, a nd died in September, 1876. They were married, October 22, 1846, and the ir children were named as follows: George W born July 20, 1848, is farmi ng at Rosewood, Ohio; David W, born December 27, 1849, was a soldier in t he regular army and died in California; Daniel W , born March 27, 1851, di ed in early life; John Andrews, born May 13, 1853, is deceased; Charles Fr anklin, born December 18, 1854 is deceased; James A, of this sketch: Ma ry Elizabeth, born April 27, 1858 is deceased; Martha Jane, born Janua ry 6, 1860 is deceased; William Lincoln, born December 30, 1860, died in F ebruary 1917, at Huntington, Iowa, where he was foreman in the railroad sh ops; Clara Bell, born March 11, 1863, is deceased; Emma Jane, born Novemb er 30, 1864 is deceased; Fannie Ellen, born August 7, 1866, is single a nd living at Rosewood, Ohio; Amanda Jane , born May 7, 1868 married Ben Sa ndy, and she is now deceased.
James A Powell grew up on the home farm and attended the common school s. He lived with his parents until his marriage on October 14, 1879, to Sa rah Ellen Dye, a native of Miami County, Ohio, and a daughter of James a nd Mary (Evilsizer) Dye, both natives of Ohio, he of Miami county, and s he of Champaign county. Clara Belle Wiser passed away at her home thirteen miles west of this ci ty on February 23, 1927 at the age of 67 years, 10 months, and 6 days. S he had been a sufferer from heart trouble for a number of years and it w as this trouble which caused her death. Clara Belle Wiser was born in Oh io on March 29, 1859 and came to this country in 1880. She was marri ed on November 9, 1887 in Central City to Stephen Wiser who preceded h er in death. To this union were born six children, all of whom are livin g. She has lived all of her married life with the exception of the fir st year on the farm where she died. Mrs. Wiser was a character that was greatly admired and loved by her assoc iates. Her life, though marred by illness, was one of great activity a nd service to her family and her community and her church. She leaves to mourn her, one daughter, Mrs. Sam Magnuson of Chapman, fi ve sons, Harrison of Council Bluffs Powa], Arthur, Grant, Raymond, and Ste ven of Chapman, two sisters, Mrs. Logan Hilligas, and Mrs. L.E. Powe ll of Central City and two brothers, Grant Dye of Central City and Louis D ye of Alliance. The funeral services will be held from the home at 2:30 Friday afternoo n. Rev. Dunbar of Chapman will be in charge with Rev. Floyd W. Johnst on of Central City assisting. Interment will be made in the Central Ci ty Cemetery.

History of Merrick Co, NE pg 409 Stephen Lewis Wiser, a Civil War Veteran, was born March 16, 1843 in New J ersey. He came to Merrick County from Petersburg, Illinois in 1871. He w as married to Sarah Shipley in 1874 and she died in 1876. Stepehn Wiser a nd Clara Belle Dye were married in Merrick county, November 9, 1887. S he was born March 29, 1859 in Ohio to James Dye and Mary Ann (Evilsizer) D ye. The Dye family came to Merrick county in 1880 from Urbana, Ohio, in co vered wagons with eight of their nine children. Stepehn Wiser was a memb er of the GAR and the Mason Lodge in Central City. For many years he was P resident of the Merrick County Agricultural Society. At one time, Stepe hn Wiser and W E Marsh organized a stock company to buy land for a Coun ty Fair. It was highly successful and several excellent fairs were he ld on ground now occupied by the Central City Cemetery Association. Stepe hn and Clara Wiser had fourteen years of married life on their Prairie Cre ek farm before her died March 26, 1902, leaving a family of six childre n. With the help of good neighbors and the two oldest boys, Harrison and A rthur, Clara Wiser managed to keep the family together on the farm. She di ed February 13, 1927. Their children were: Harrison who lived in Council B luffs, Iowa and worked in the Union Pacific Roundhouse there. Born Augu st 27, 188 and died January 30, 1965. He was married to Mary Walker of Cen tral City.: Arthur who farmed in the Chapman and Clarks communities, bo rn June 24 1890 and died May 18, 1972. He was married to Alice Johns on of Central City: Anna, who married Sam Magnuson and live a half mile ea st of where she was born until moving to Central City in 1947. Born Augu st 3, 1892 and died May 16, 1963: Grant, who lived in Indianapolis, Indian a. Born October 1, 1894 died February 15, 1958. He was married to Mary Lou ise Gravelle of Canada: Raymond, who lived in Fullerton, Nebraska until ar ound 1938 when he moved his family to McMinneville, Oregon. Born June 8, 1 897 and died August 16, 1955. He was married to Grace Sinsel of Chapman: S tephen, who also lived in Fullerton, Nebraska until around 1938 when he al so moved his family to McMinneville, Oregon. Courrier-Merrick County Nebraska, Thursday, march 28, 1901 Stephen L Wiser died Tuesday night, March 26, at his home in Prairie Cre ek township. When this announcement reached the city yesterday it caused e xpressions of sorrow on every hand. His health had been bad for some ti me but it was not generally known that his condition was so critical. A we ek ago last Saturday he was in the city, just recovering from a severe att ack of the grippe, and seemed to have taken cold on the trip, as he was ta ken down again and continued to grow worse until the end. At his age, in t he 60's, he was unable to withstand the relapse. Me Wiser was one of the p ioneers who helped to open up and improve Merrick County. He settled he re about thirty years ago and has since been continually identified with t he county as one of its most progressive and public spirited farmers. F or many years he was president of the Merrick County agricultural Socie ty and has held many other positions of trust, in all of which he acquitt ed himself as an upright and honorable man, and leaves behind him an envia ble reputation for honor and integrity. In all respects, Mr Wiser was a go od citizen and his death is a distinctive loss to the community. He w as a member of the G A R and also a mason of long standing. The funeral wi ll occur tomorrow (Friday) from his late home in Prairie Creek townshi p, at 10 o'clock A.M. after which the procession will proceed to the coun ty cemetery, near the city, where the burial ceremonies will take place.

Willie was a steady, industrious boy and won the esteem of everyone. His illness was of short duration and he bore all suffering manfully. His l ast moments were full of peace and joy and as he drew near to the other sh ore he said " I thank the Lord for all he's done for me." "Meet me in heaven, Aunt Sallie." He was buried at the Center grave yard, Green Twp, Jay C ounty, beside his mother and the large concourse of people present sure ly testified to the esteem in which he was held. He leaves a father, Broth ers, and sisters to mourne his departure. Meet him in heaven.
