Robert Rush Moton was my great-great-grandfather and I repeatedly
heard the same story about his demise. After retiring he lived with
one of his children and was quite a handful (vile-tempered, mean to
children, and so on). One of his favorite stunts was to have a
cussing fit and go stomping off to the woodshed where there was a
rusty old single-shot .22 rifle. He would then make a big production
out of announcing that he would rather be dead than treated the way he
was, then he would put the barrel in his mouth and pull the trigger.
This went on for years because the rifle was unloaded, something old
Moton knew until one day the inevitable happened. The sheriff ruled
it a suicide but some family members suspected otherwise, wondering if
someone had not gotten fed up with the ornery old varmint and loaded
the rifle intentionally. It was the perfect crime and nobody asked
questions. After all, everybody was pretty much happy to be delivered
of him. My mother, by the way, was the granddaughter of his, Rush's
daughter, Rosella.

Robert, called Rush, was an Orphan who spent most of his childhood in
the Stubblefield Orphanage in Walla Walla, WA. He did remember coming
from Alabama at about 4 or 5 years of age,
There was a story related about Robert getting into a fight with his
brother and throwing a hatchet at him and cutting his upper lip. This
would have been in the late 1840s or very early 1850s. In the 1920s
shortly before his death one of the Moton girls sent letters to all
the Post Masters in the area of Alabama Robert thought he came from
and one of them forwarded the letter to some people in Florida. The
daughter of the man in Florida wrote back and said her father had worn
a mustache to cover such a scar and the two men now in their early 80s
were going to meet when the man in Florida and his daughters family
came to Montana in the summer. One of the men died before that meeting
took place. The man in Florida went by the name "Morton" instead of
Moton. It is felt that Robert Rush Moton may have been Robert Rush
Morton but was too young and had a southern accent and did not
pronounce his R's well.
I have found the following Morton names in Florida. The time frame
fits.
