He began his ministry in South Carolina on the waters of Lynches Creek in the 1760s and moved inland to Duncans Creek where he wasable to convert a sizable group of Presbyterians into Baptists. In 1805, as part of a general migration from western South Carolina to eastern Indiana, he led his flock to an area just west of Cincinnati, Ohio. This group included Richard Stiles, as well as Elizabeth's brothers Robert and William Glidewell.

Rev. Joshua Palmer had three children: William Palmer who lived in Franklin Co In, Mary who married Zachariah Sparks in South Carolina and settled in Bartholomew Co, In and Joshua Palmer who married Fanny, daughter of Richard Stiles.

In 1805 the congregation decided to remove to the north. They chose the White Water River area of Hamilton County, Ohio. The journey north was interrupted by the illness of Rev. Palmer's wife and they spent the winter in central Kentucky. Upon arriving at the White Water River area, the congregation settled in. Richard Stiles went just north of Hamilton County to Butler County and proceeded to die in 1806. His wife, Elizabeth, bought land in Butler County and stayed there until 1811, then moved across the border to Franklin County (later Union County) Indiana with the Palmers. By this time her daughter Rebecca had married a young James Armstrong who had moved with them. There is a strong opinionthat many of the people who opposed slavery moved north at this time fearing that a civil war would come. This is true of many of the North Carolinian Quakers.

My notes;
On census of 1820 Franklin Indiana

It shows Joshua Palmer and James Armstrong, who were brothers-in-law. James Armstrong married Rebecca Stiles, b. 1789, Laurens Creek, South Carolina, d. 1831 Shelby Indiana. Joshua Palmer, Jr. married Rebecca's sister Frances Stiles, b. 22 Nov 1886 in South Carolina.

Paraphrased from Stiles Ancestry of the Jansen Sisters;

Fanny Armstrong, daughter of James Armstrong and Rebecca Stiles was killed in a runaway buggy accident abt 1837 in Noble Twsp, Shelby Co, Indiana. Her child, James Monroe Kitchel b 26 Jan 1837 Noble Twp, Shelby Co, Indiana was raised from birth by Elihu Palmer and Amy Armstrong Palmer. Therefore, Amy and Elihu raised their cousin's child. Frances (Fanny) Palmer, mother of Fanny Armstrong, was the wife of Joshua Palmer, Jr. b. 1784, thus Elihu and Amy were first cousins. According to the Stiles history Joshua Palmer, Jr. served in the Union calvary.

SAME BOOK, PG 360-361 SHOWS WILL BY JAMES PALMER ON P 360-361.

These Notes are from the Jantzen sisters, who spent years of research on this line. The Palmer line was not their line, but the axillary lines of Stiles, Glidewell, Worsham, et cetera, were and Elihu Palmer and Amy Armstrong raised their ancestor, James Kitchell, son of Amy Armstrong's sister.

A such, their investigations of the Palmers was limited to that which goes back to the Reverend Joshua Palmer, who was allied with their connecting families, the Stiles, Glidewells, et cetera. Without research beyond that point they assumed that the Palmer line goes back to Walter Palmer of Connecticut , which is incorrect and is borne out by the William Palmer Society's list of known descendants.

The Palmer line to Sir Thomas Palmer, son of Edward Palmer of Toddenham, which is given in this family tree, is that which has supportive evidence. There is no connection to the Massachusetts Palmers, at least not in America.

Joshua Palmer, Sr 12 Mar 1750 Amherst, Virginia became a Baptist minister, apparently after service in the Revolution. He led his congregation composed of the families mentioned below (the Stiles, Glidewell, et cetera families).

Also, a correction on notes below - he did not live in Union District, South Carolina all his life. When I send for his DAR papers I am going to check what they have. There were three Joshua Palmers in Union County, but I have the correct children and the correct Joshua Palmer based on most recent research.

These sons of wealthy landowners who followed Rev. Joshua Palmer were Cadets or second sons, so had to make their own way, but one wonders how this one man, Joshua Palmer held such an influence over them. They repeatedly bought and sold land as they made their way west and continuously kept together.

FROM THE JANTSEN SISTERS

Virginia was the first settled colony with permanent settlement starting in 1609. These Colonist were Anglicans and less rigid in their practices than Puritans. In the South, wealthy landowners were more important. The original settlements were water bound as roads were to hard to build and water was the cheapest means of transportation.

As the ancestors of Rebecca Stiles arrived, they made their way up the rivers onto land that had to be cleared. From the settlements the migration went up the river and down the coast to North Carolina. The colonies followed English Law with the rule of primogeniture, leaving the majority of the estate to the oldest son, leaving the younger sons to have to find land for themselves. During the early years of the colonies, the major currency was that of tobacco; taxes and debts were figured in pounds. Thus the availability of water transportation was necessary.

Our southern migration includes two streams of settlers through Virginia.

One stream composed of the Clements, Bell, Aston, Bird, Sutton, Nash and Glidewell descendants flowed through the tidewater swamps of southern Virginia and then around Albemarle Sound into North Carolina and eastern South Carolina, with some crossing Cherokee lands to Alabama and Mississippi.

The second stream composed of the Worsham, Rowlett, Archer, Cousins and Stiles families started in Chesterfield County just south of Richmond and followed the south side Virginia rivers inland without going into North Carolina.

The streams met well inland on Little Blue Wing Creek in Halifax County VA as Robert Glidewell moved back into VA from North Carolina and Richard Stiles moved west from Mecklenberg County into Halifax County.

Then after the American Revolution the Stiles and Glidewell families moved together to Duncan's Creek in Laurens County, South Carolina, where they met baptist preacher Rev Joshua Palmer and became members of his congregation. He then led them to Ohio west of Cincinnati where they settled at West Liberty, Union County, Indiana. The Stiles and Palmers continued migrating together, drifting across Indiana and then to Sullivan County, Missouri

The family of Elihu PALMER (1805-1875) husband of Amy ARMSTRONG aunt who raised James Monroe KITCHEL from infancy after his mother died Joshua Palmer married Fanny Stiles and raised a family of 11 children. Joshua died in Indiana before 1850, but Fanny accompanied her children's families to Owen County IN, Coles County, Illinois and Sullivan County, Missouri, where she died in 1861 at the age of 77. Their son Elihu Palmer married Amy Armstrong (his first cousin) daughter of my ancestors James Armstrong and Rebecca Stiles and had 12 children. Amy's sister Fanny Armstrong married Albert Bowers Kitchel and had one child, my great grandfather James Monroe Kitchel. When Fanny died the infant was raised in the Elihu Palmer household. Albert Bowers Kitchel then remarried to Nancy Palmer, sister of Elihu and had seven more children.

Additional information about this story Description Service during American Revolution and petition of Parmenus Palmer for pension of his father. Date 1775 to 1832 Location Union District, South Carolina Attached to Reverand Joshua Palmer (1746 - 1835)

Interesting story about Reverand Joshua Palmer; David George was born into slavery in Virginia in 1742, but ran away to South Carolina where he hid for several years -- first as a servant to Creek chief Blue Salt, then to Natchez chief King Jack, who sold him to a plantation in Silver Bluff, South Carolina, near the Georgia border.

Between 1773 and 1775, George, his wife, and six other slaves owned by George Galphin were converted to Christianity and baptized by Joshua Palmer, a white Baptist itinerant minister. Following Dunmore's proclamation, white ministers were prohibited from preaching to slaves "lest they should furnish...too much knowledge." Upon Palmer's recommendation, George took on responsibility for the Silver Bluff group.

present Union County and the north-eastern part of Franklin County.(19) The first taxlist of Franklin County, Indiana includes the names Joshua Palmer Sr., Joshua Palmer Jr., William Palmer, and William Sparks (husband of Joshua's daughter Mary).(20) Joshua Palmer was pastor of New Hope Church in Indiana in 1812(21) and nearly all of the rest of his life was spent in Union County.(22) His death date is unknown, but he probably died before 1820.

Rev. Joshua Palmer had three known children: William, Mary, and Joshua, who were all born in South Carolina. William was born about 1774 and died in 1840; he married Jane Gill.(23) Mary was born in 1779 and died in 1848; she married William Sparks.(24) Joshua was born in 1784; he married Fanny Stiles.(25) All three children married in South Carolina and moved to Indiana with their father. William's family later moved to Illinois and Iowa. Mary Sparks and her family stayed in Indiana. Joshua Jr. probably died in Bartholomew County, Indiana between 1840 and 1850; some of his descendants went to Sullivan County, Missouri.

??????? A second Joshua Palmer resided in South Carolina in the latter half of the 18th Century and has been confused in some writings with Rev. Joshua Palmer. This second Joshua was born in Amelia County, Virginia in 1750, but lived in Union District, South Carolina at the time of the Revolution. He served in Brandon's Regiment, which was raised in Union District. In his 1832 petition for a veteran's pension, he stated "I lived in Union District when I entered the Service and have lived here ever since." (26) He was probably the Joshua Palmer who was granted 120 and 380 acres on the waters of the Broad River in the 1780's.(27) In the 1790 census of South Carolina, he is listed in Union District, with 2

When any definitive history of Clark County is written, the story of Gearshum and Sarah Van Atta is certain to take up several pages.

The pioneer Brush Prairie couple had 14 children and their children had many children. Their descendants married the sons and daughters of other pioneers, and today it almost seems that almost everyone there is in some way related to a Van Atta.

Gearshum was born in Pennsylvania in 1813. After fighting in the Indian wars, he married Sarah Caroline Palmer in 1833 in Illinois. The couple had 10 children before deciding to head west to the Oregon country.

The Van Attas crossed the plains in 1854, settling first in Linn County, Ore. They lived there long enough for three more children to be born, then settled in Brush Prairie in 1863 where one more daughter, Irene Rebecca, was born.

Along with their prodigious family, the Van Attas should be remembered for helping found the Brush Prairie Baptist Church, which is still going strong and is recognized as the oldest Baptist congregation in Washington. They also deeded the land for the Brush Prairie cemetery, which is recognized as one of the most historic pioneer cemeteries in the county.

Gearshum died in 1896 and Sarah in 1901. Both lie in the cemetery they deeded to the county in 1885.
