Thomas was the son of James Van Atta, born 2May1771 in what became
Beaver County, Pa.; may have been petition signer in 1804 for division
of North Beaver Twp.; believed to have been married twice, first to
Hannah _____ (born 20Dec1769 in Beaver County area), secondly to
Elizabeth (Betsy) Hull (born in 1784 in Beaver County) Betsy was also
his step sister; he died in 1837 in Beaver Courity; she died in 1868
at Jasper County, Iowa.
James was the son of John Vanata/Vanatta who was born between 1740 and
1750. John was a blacksmith by trade, he possibly had three different
wives. His first marriage was in 1770 to Lidia _____. Then, in 1791/2,
he married Rachel Hull. A third marriage was to Sarah _____. He died
in 1831 or 1832 at an age of over 80 at Mt. Jackson, North Beaver
TWp., which became a part of Lawrence County.

How many children did they have? The obituaries for each say 12 and
only three were living when he died (four when she died). His
biographical sketch in the 1878 History of Jasper County, Iowa says
they "have" eight: Nancy (now Mrs. W. Morton), Mary (now Mrs. W. R.
McCully in Nebraska), Appaline (now Mrs. Richard Kiddoo of Missouri),
Hannah (now Mrs. A. Young of Kansas), Joseph A., Richard M., Thomas R.
and Charles F. and notes that the oldest son, James, enlisted in the
5th Iowa Volunteer Infantry in the Civil War, was wounded twice,
discharged, returned home and died 18 months later "from the effect of
taking a severe cold while in the army," which would name nine known
children. Thomas Vanatta's will, written 14 Nov 1900, names seven
(James died 8 Feb 1866 and Thomas R. 13 Apr 1877). The total of 12
children cited in their obituaries suggests that there are three other
unknown children who may have died in infancy. Parents: James VANATTA and Elizabeth HULL.

Simmons (male) b. abt 1848 in Texas may be related. More info needed. The name "Vest" has not been ascertained as being her correct name. We know from the census her first name is Mary. Her death date is not known but William was remarried abt. 1858-1859, using the age of his first child with Elizabeth, as starting point.
