8 March 1825 - Marriage of George Chicken and Elizabeth Bell at Jarrow;

2 March 1833 - Birth of George Bell Chicken at Howden Pans, Tynemouth;

12 Dec 1833 - Baptism of George Bell Chicken at Wallsend St Peters

1833 - 1839 - No known whereabouts of GBC - probably Wallsend/Tynemouth;

1839 - George Chicken Senior as "Shipping Butcher" at Cock Hill, Ratcliff, London (Directory);

June 1841 - Census at "Coal Meters Arms", Lower Shadwell - GBC with parents and siblings - his mother the Landlady;

1847 - 1852 - Apprentice aboard the "Darlington", a 207 ton snow (No. 26219) owned & managed by his father George Chicken;

31 March 1851 - Census at East Howden - Elizabeth Chicken nee Bell with her Father and family - No George, the father, or GBC;

20 Feb 1852 - Issue of Certificate of Competency as "Only Mate" - Number 3750 (residence Saugh House, Howden);

1852 - 1854 - Various voyages - West Coast of America, Valparaiso, Copenhagen, Baltic, Grimsby as Mate of "Darlington";

24 Feb 1854 - Obtained Master's Certificate, sailed as Captain of the "Darlington" to the Baltic;

6 Feb 1855 ? - "Enlisted" in the Navy, according to Phillip Pike, (Victoria Cross Commem. Society - Letter 28th Jan 1998);

22 Mar 1855 - GBC sails Irvine to Madras as Master of the "Hastings", a 595 tonner (No. 14716);

10 Jul 1855 ? - GBC sails from England (VCCS letter);

25 Jul 1855 - GBC discharged (?) from "Hastings" Calcutta;

31 Oct 1855 ? Arrives Calcutta and joins Indian Navy (VCCS letter);

10 May 1857 - Start of the Indian Mutiny (Sunday evening at Meerut);

August 1857 Sir William Peel forms his Indian Naval Brigade from the "Shannon";

31 July 1858 - Appointed Acting Master (Volunteer) in the Indian Navy, on the books of HMS "Calcutta" (Winton);

To Mar 1859 - Doing Duty at Fort William, then joined No. 3 Detachment of Naval Brigade (Winton & Low);

27 Sep 1858 - Action in which he won the Victoria Cross at Suhejnee, Peroo, Bengal - badly wounded;

6 Oct 1858 - Adjutant General of the Army recommends to the Governor General the award of the Victoria Cross to GBC;

23 Oct 1858 - Secretary to the Government of India confirms the award of the Victoria Cross (N & S S Gazette);

20 Jan 1859 - North & South Shields Gazette reports "Mr George B Chicken has since received the Victoria Cross";

April 1859 - End of the Indian Mutiny;

30 Nov 1859 - GBC returned to Calcutta (Low);

March 1860 - Given command of HM Schooner "Emily" 90 tons (2 guns);

27 April 1860 - Gazetting of the Award of the Victoria Cross to GBC;

March/May 1860 - HM Schooner "Emily" lost at sea "with all hands" including George Bell Chicken off Sandheads, Bay of Bengal;

4 March 1862 - Father George Chicken receives his son's medal by post at 35 King David Lane, Shadwell, London East;

July 1862 - HM Schooner "Emily" sold (Colledge);

26 Dec 1865 - George & Elizabeth Chicken admitted to 13 Trinity Almshouses, Mile End;

15 March 1872 - Death of his Mother, Elizabeth Chicken, age 67, at 13 Trinity Green Almshouses, Mile End, Bethnal Green;

2 October 1873 - Death of his Father, George Chicken, age 73, at 13 Trinity Green Almshouses, Mile End, Bethnal Green.
