Discussion

It is likely the Robert and Augusta Dressler separately emigrated in 1855 at age 21 from the area of Poland. As shown at the right, Robert's and Augusta's birthplace has been variously given as Germany, Poland, and Russia, with Prussia once for Robert. If we presume that Robert's census entries track the political changes in the area, then his place of origin was in Poland in the mid 1800s and then in Russia by 1880 to 1900. Russia in 1880 seems likely since his 1880 naturalization so indicates. It is not clear why most of the children state Germany as their origin. Robert could be from the area of eastern Poland / western Ukraine, which shifted back and forth politically in the 1800's, since during different censuses his birthplace is more frequently Poland and Russia. There are a number of Dresslers listed in records for Kopyczynce and surrounding towns in the region known as Galicia. which was generally under Austrian control. However, the area just to the north shifted as part of Congress Poland (which is consistent with Russian affiliation), but not Germany, during the 1800s. As for Augusta, since he is almost always shown as Polish or German, she would likely from come from farther west.

No record of their marriage has been found yet. Augusta's maiden name was most likely Marks, although her own death certificate states her mother as Augusta Marks and father as Barentt Selig (although supposely among German Jews the word Selig after a name means "of blessed memory"). In the 1868 and 1874 directories, there is a Solomon Marks (b. 1835 in Prussia according to the 1870 and 1880 censuses and immigrated before 1856 based on the age of US born children) who is also a tailor working in the same block as Robert. He could possibly be related to Augusta; however, the Solomon Marks family appears to live quite a distance away based on the census.

Robert's death certificate lists his father as Meyer, but his tombstone inscription notes him as "Reuven, son of Baruch."

Based on the census and Brooklyn directory, Robert Dressler was a tailor. Arriving in the US in October 1854, he lived in Brooklyn in Williamsburgh near the Navy Yard from about 1857 until 1867, then moving to New Lots, Kings Co. This timing coincides roughly with the start of construction of the Brooklyn Bridge which obliterated some of the neighboring areas and was probably highly disruptive to local businesses. He is living at 119 Atlantic Ave. in New Lots in 1880, and then purchased 2753 Fulton about 1893, his address when he died. See maps below for locations of residences.
