Discussion

Several clues exist regarding Gaffney origins in Ireland:

Massachusetts death certificates for the three Gaffney siblings all list their parents and John Gaffney and Mary Smith.
Anne Gaffney's probate record notes a brother John Gaffney living in "Mowian" in Co. Cavan. Considering the birth dates of the three U.S. Gaffney's, he would have been born in the period of about 1846 to 1862.

There is no Mowian in Ireland. Phoenetically, it could be mo-we-an or mau-e-en. Several Gaffney/Smith families were found in the right timeframe in central Co. Cavan, but none have a John G with a Mary S. In a discussion with the genealogist at the Cavan library, she suggested Mowian could be Moneen (mo-nee-en), Killinagh, Co. Cavan. There is a John Gaffney (age 50 / age 71) with wife Mary (age 40 / age 59) in the (1901 / 1911) Irish census. If born in 1851, this John would fit as a brother, but if born in 1840 neither brother nor father seems likely [note: jr. does not necessarily indicate a relationship]. Ireland civil registrations list a Mary Gaffney passing in Moneen in 1898 at age 81 (born 1817) and Griffth's valuation in 1857 lists John Gaffney jr in Moneen.
