Discussion

The origins are John Barnett Rice are not known, nor the details of his demise. The oldest child was born in 1833. There are some other Rice/Ryce census entries in the early 1800s, but John Barnet first clearly appears in the 1840 census, and buys the tract Westham from Major Sothoron about 1846. By th 1850 census, he is apparently gone. In a subsequent 1855 St. Mary's County Circuit Court case, he is described as having gone crazy and left, having subsequently drowned when crossing a river. The tie to Mrs. Mary Ann Hill is the basis for wife Margaret's maiden name of Bleathen.
