Born: poss. 1842 in Zasliai, Lithuania
Married: Jenni/Zehna/Sheina Ellenbogen (10 Oct 1838 in Lithuania - 24 Dec 1917 in NY, NY) 28 Feb 1861 in Vilnius Lithuania Immigrated: Uncertain; family 1872 Died: Btwn 1875-1876 | Father: Vulf Sass
Mother: Ryvka Khaya ? Religion: Jewish |
The first name is subject to debate (table), being Louis/Lewis, Lester, Lazarus, and Elzear. Most of these have a possible common Hebrew/Yiddish origin, a variant of Eliezer Leyzer, which can turn into Eliezer, Lazarus, or Louis, and Lozer which sounds close to Lester. At least, the middle initial is always D, with the middle name being given as David per Rose's death certificate. Americanization leading to Louis or Lester David seems plausible based on grandsons being named Louis David and Lester David. Based on the 1875 directory entries and the following year's entry showing his wife as a widow, his death date should be 1875 or 1876. There is no evidence in NYC death records for death of a Louis, Lester, David, or Elezear Sass or Zass, though.
One could almost suppose that L. Sass never immigrated, except for the presence of two directory entries. As Louis, the most likely immigration entry would be one of the two in 1868 since it appears the rest of the family arrived in 1872, although that leaves open the question of how Samuel came about. |

The family, minus L., may have arrived on the Hammonia (see below), but the actual date of the family's immigration is hard to pin down based on other records:
From the similarity in addresses (e.g., living at 181 Henry at same time as Mordecai & Mary Sass Kauffman, in the 1913 directory at 968 Fox St. which is the address of Rose Sass Harris at her death in 1924) and links on naturalization papers (Samuel Sass witness), it seems likely that Max Sass is part of the same family, probably a nephew. The Max whose death certificate is given below is probably the right Max, since his wife is Theresa and Max & Theresa Sass census entries in 1900 and 1910 are in about the right location. Two census entries indicate he arrived in 1886, consistent with a first directory appearance in 1888. He is a tailor or clothing salesman at various times, as opposed to the Max Sass who was in the diamond business (and went bankrupt) about the same time.
Sometime after 1900, Jennie Sass remarried. Her obituary in The New York Times on 26 Dec 1917 reads: "FELENSTEIN, (SASS) - Jennie B., beloved mother of Samuel Sass, Mrs. Mary Kauffman, Mrs. Rose Harris, Mrs. Kate Livingston. Funeral from her late residence, 210 Lenox Ave., Wednesday, December 26, 10 A. M. Please omit flowers."
