Augusta Marks (23 Dec 1831 - 16 Apr 1911); m. Robert Dressler in 1855 in Brooklyn, NY

Discussion

It is likely Robert and Augusta Dressler emigrated separately in 1854, at ages 20 and 21, from the eastern region of Poland / Lithuania / western Ukraine which shifted back and forth politically in the 1800's since during different censuses they reported their birthplace first as Poland and then as Russia.

Family history was that Robert Dressler's wife was Augusta Marks, and it is so noted on the death certification of George Dressler, a son of Robert. However, the source of the Marks name in both cases would have been Lester Kauffman, who married a grand-daughter of Robert Dressler. Robert's wife Augusta Dressler's own death certificate reports her father as Barnett Selig and her mother as Augusta Marks. This would push the Marks surname back a generation. Since Augusta Dressler's death certificate is a generation (nearly 35 years earlier), it would appear to be the more likely to be correct. However, there is a almost certain match in immigration records, showing August Marks, age 21, arriving in New York the same year as Robert Dressler. Based on this record, it seems certain that Augusta (whichever her surname) immigrated alone, without her family.

In the 1868 and 1874 directories, there is a Solomon Marks (b. 1835 in Prussia according to the 1870 and 1880 censuses and immigrated before 1856 based on age of US born children) who is also a tailor working in the same block. He could possibly be related to Augusta; however, the Solomon Marks family appears to live quite a distance away based on the census. There is an Abraham Marks, clothing, at 88 Main in 1859 through 1861, which is about a block from R. Dressler.
