Discussion

The tie between the majority of the children listed and Philip was originally the entries on the list for children to be educated at the expense of the county, the 1850 Census listing which includes Philip & Ann Ullman with children Hannah, David, and Harriet coupled with John Ullman's 1900 will listing his siblings, including Hannah and Harriet. In that 1850 Census, John Ulman is also listed, separated by one family from Philip's.

Philip Ulman is the only Ulman listed consistently in censuses for PA in the early 1800s. There is no Philip Ulman listing in the 1800 census. Indexes report a Philip Ulmer in Upper Providence in 1820, but the actual entry looks most like Philip Ulmen.

Uriah Ullman's (s/o Lewis) bible noted below provided confirmatory evidence for the family. Lewis' mother is listed as Ann. This is supported by Emma Ullman's (d/o Benjamin Franklin Ullman) bible having a death announcement for Ellen V. Ullman, wife of Lewis. Also, Lewis, Lewis' son Uriah, Benjamin, and Benjamin's son John were all butchers (as was at least one Vanderslice). Finally, Lewis was known by the title Colonel and Benjamin was known as Major; reason not identified. Six children are definitely assoicated by reference in John Ullman's will (Philip's two oldest likely not being mentioned because they were deceased). The census in which he appears gives the possible family breakdowns shown at the right.

Comparing the census info yields birth ranges shown for Philip and his wife. Lewis Ullman's mother Ann was born about 1788 according to her obituary and in 1790 according to her tombstone, which fits the census data. Lewis lived in Upper Providence until at least 1837, since Uriah is noted as born there. Lewis' 1860 Census entry (age 43) is likely in error and he left Philip's house by 1830, making him slightly older than his wife (born ~1812).

The 1860 Upper Providence Census lists a Philip Ullman living alone, profession "Gentleman", age 78 (birth date 1783), and apparent place of birth Nassau. Since he is listed as coming from Germany in the 1850 census, it is likely Nassau, Germany, of which there are four possibilities (Baden-Wuerttemberg, Rheinland-Pflaz, Bayern, and just south of Dresden). At the time of the 1870 census, Ann Ullman was living with daughter Hannah Ullman Zimmerman in St. Joseph, MO. The 1850 and 1860 censuses also lists the younger (age 43) Philip Ullman.

Philip Ulman and his wife in the 1840 census are both reported as 30-39 years old, which is not consistent with either Philip. Four children under 10 and consistency with other years, though, would indicate this is the older Philip.

Philip Ullman was listed as born in Germany according to the 1850 Census. The absence of any names like Ullman from census records before 1810 is consistent with arrival some time before 1810. The arrival of a Philip Ullman on the Favourite 15 Nov 1803 from Amsterdam to Philadelphia is likely the right Philip. If it is, then the most likely Nassau would be the one in Rheinland-Pflaz, slightly east of Koblenz on a line toward Mainz, and closest of the four to Amsterdam. Per the IGI, there are several Philip Ullman entries at about the right timeframe.

Reconstructed Bio

Philip Ullman was born in Germany and immigrated to the US on the Favourite in 1803, arriving in Philadelphia. He was in Upper Providence Township of Montgomery County by 1810 and stayed there until he died. He had married Ann Clayton shortly after his arrival in the US. His first son Lewis was born in between 1808 and 1812. Ann and he had 11 children from 1808 through 1836, with at least nine of them living to adulthood. He was apparently poor, since his children from 1826 through 1839 are listed in Poor Children to be Educated at County Expense. A farmer in the 1850 census with a real estate value of $900, Phillip Ullman is shown living on the east side of what is now Hollow Road at the bend just north of Jasper Lane (halfway between Egypt Rd and Black Rock Rd). In the 1860 census, he is listed as a gentlemen. This location is consistent with census listings in 1850 and 1860.
