Actually, Fung Kuoi Kee (Ah Kuoi) and Mele were together before 1917 as in Michael Field's book. The eldest daughter would have been born in 1913.
There were 12 free settlers in 1903 prior to the first arrival of labourers. 8 of them were merchants.
