Hi, I am responding to your question about the meaning of Lin. From what I was told Lin means tree or wood. My last name also bears the same definition, and when written out in Chinese, they also share the same character. So I am guessing that somehow along the way there was a misspelling, perhaps during times of immigration, because I know that my father meant to put down Lim as his last name when he came to AMerica, but for some reason it got changed to Lam, but all in all, Lim, Lam, Lim, and Lum all mean the same thing in Chinese. Not sure if I helped you in any way, but I hope I did!
