My great grandfather was born in China. Migrated to Australia in 1840's or 50's - possibly via England. Do not know his Chinese name - anglicised name: Dan Nye. He spoke very good English, and acted as an intepreter for Chinese in the local court in Wagga, NSW, where he lived. In his possession he had a large English cedar sea chest, and a small chinese vase (which is still in the family). Handpainted characters on its base have been translated as Yang He Zaro ("Made by Yeung Wo" - Mandarin???). Sorry, my computer cannot do the Chinese characters.
His son told me his father was born in about 1828 in Amoy province, but I need help. This is a frustrating search so far!
