: : : : : Hi I am trying to trace my heritage my grandfather's name was Benjamin Yap he lived in Hawaii. He died in 1948 married Ruth had 3 children -Titus, Cynthia, and Judy. If any one can help me please do so
: : : : : Thanks.

: : : : Yap is a Hokkien variation of the surname Ye(Mandarin) and Yip (Cantonese). If you have a Chinese viewer (ex. NJWIN CKJ), you can view how it is written: ?. This character means "leaf."

: : : : Since it is a Hokkien surname, it means that your ancestor came from southern Fujian province. He might problably came from the port city of Xiamen (also known as Amoy.)

: : : : D. Yap

: : : Karla, I think I had an aunt who lived in Hawaii some time in the past 20 years. Her name was either Joyce or Shirley Yap - who I'm also trying to find. My ancestors came from a village in China called Loong Boy Liang. Do you think we could be related somewhere along the line. Would love to hear from you. From K.Yap.

: :
: : Interesting. I vaguely recall Shirley. I know of
: : a Eunice Yap. Her son and me used to go skin
: : diving for lobster in Punaluu when we were in high
: : school. Can't remember his name. Shirley used to come and visit Mom and Dad, or we'd see her at some 9-course dinner or such. I saw her 2-3 times.
: : Mostly she'd come during the day while I was away in school. My father, deceased, has an extensive
: : genealogy library, Peter Lup Young Jr. All volumes
: : of the genealogy is in the custody/curator of a cousin of mine. I'm sure 'YAP' is in there. Anyway, give a shout. I'd like to know where both of you live. I'm in Louisville, Ky.

: : Aloha>>>>>>

: : P.S. Browse thru this section until you come across an query from Alexa Merrill. You'll see the word 'Yap' in her comments. Lexy is my cousin and she lives in Indy. Have fun>>>>

: Hi Peter, this is Karen. Geez, it has been a looong time since I've decided to look at this program again. I'm writing from B.C., Canada. Wow, if you do know this Shirley Yap, that would be so awesome..... I would love to chat with you further to exchange information so I hope you will
: ssee this comment somewhere along the line! Karen. I will look up the cousin you spoke of in this program.

Karen,
Benjamin Shui On YAP is a maternal grand uncle of mine. His father is YAP See Young; his mother, KONG En Fah. YAP See Young was the adopted son of YAP Meu Tchiang (Hakka) or YEH Mou Chin (Mandarin). Ben married Ruth Kam In CHOW and had three children: Titus Jan Yin YAP (m. Merna Y.C. WONG), Cynthia "Girlie" Len Oi YAP (m. Raymond MORRIS), and Judy Nyuk Oi YAP (m. Kenneth HARDY).

I responded to Karla Diamond's original message posted 11 Aug 1998 sometime last year, but got no response. Please contact me to verify this line of inquiry by e-mail or my home address below. Mahalo and Aloha!
