In reading your comments on going to visit your father's or grandfather's villages. My father came from Toisan (Taishan in atlas) but I found out it is a municipality. So you have to know the village they are from. eg: Fou Shek Village in Municipality of Toi-San in Province of Guangdong (Canton) in Nan Ping Area. A friend told me she visited her father's ancestral village a few years ago and even slept in the village house he had been born in. She made out okay as she spoke some Cantonese and got by. I guess if you don't speak Cantonese you'd best get a translator to accompany you. She said it was quite a cultural shock but great meeting all the relatives!
