There is still a thriving community of Chinese in Mexico. I believe Mexico City. The kids will usually carry both parents last name. Ex. My great-uncle immigrated to Mexico City in the mid-40's. His Chinese surname is Chow. In Mexico they transliterated it into Chio. If you know what his name was in Mexico you could try to track down relatives. Normally people would immigrate to another country only if they had relatives or people from the same village already over there.

There are a lot of Toy San and Hoy Ping (villages in Guangdong) in Mexico City.
