Dear Alison,

Your grandfather most likely came from Chaozhou { (Mand: chao2 zhou1, Cant: chiu4 jau1), a city in Guangdong (Canton) province, very close to Fujian province. Sometimes Chaozhou is written Chiu Chow, Chao Chow, Teo Chew, or Teo Chiu. The dialect belongs to the Min family of dialects, to which Fujian (Fukien, Hokkien), Taiwanese, Hainanese also belong.

A lot of Chinese in Vietnam also trace their ancestry to Chaozhou.

The Chinese for horse is (Mand: ma3, Cant: ma5). So, Chinese with the surname Ma most likely share your grandfathers surname. In your grandfathers dialect I guess it is pronounced bae. A lot of characters with an initial m- sound in Mandarin and Cantonese have an initial b- sound in Min dialects.

Go to the site below to find the origin of the surname Ma.

They have Beh as one of the pronunciations for horse.

Note: You probably cant see the characters that I typed in unless you have your computer set up to view Chinese.

Kobo-Daishi, PLLA.
