Can't help you with Tong because it may not necessarily be a real surname. Probably the personal name of Willam. However, there is a surname called Tong. You need a complete Chinese name to reveal the surname. The place is Amoy (local dialect)in Fujian Province, now normally known as Xiamen.

: Can someone tell me the meaning of the surname Tong.
: My husbands G/G/Grandfather was known by records in Australia as John Tong. This was later changed(or just written incorrectly) to Anthon/Anthong finally becoming Thomas Cook.
: On the record I have it states John Tong,s father as William Tong.
: Also from what area would the name Tong have come from.
: on the record I have it is not really legible but appears to state from Awoy, China.
