Ja I'm guessing would be equivalent to the mandarin Xie (Hsieh). "Man"...well I'm guessing if you want to find the equivalent it maybe Ban in other places since Ban and Man are pronounced so alike (but I never heard of the last name) - I know this since Hokkien have tendency to spell English pronunciation of M and B alike.
: My ancestor became John Mann when he was naturalised, his certificate says his name was John Ja and he was born in Amoy. He was a 'shepherd' and married a Scottish woman in Maryborough Q in 1863. Any suggestions about his name? I wonder if it might have been Jia but a list of donors in an early maryborough chronicle also suggests it could have been Man!
