Hi!

His surname would be Jee. I don't recall that Jees as being from Hoi Ping although there might be a small branch. I think all the Jees/Gees I know are Toi San which is next door to Hoi Ping.

Are you that's he's from Hoi Ping? Are you sure that that's his real name and not a paper one? Many people came over with paper names (meaning they bought papers and identities). You'll need to confirm this information b/4 starting. The true information is usually on the headstone in Chinese. You might also speak with people that knew him from that time. Chinese communities down south are very close knit, especially at that time when there weren't very many and everyone know everyone. (I'm from Houston and my dad emigrated to Mississippi). Usually they wouldn't emigrate to places unless there are relatives are friends there i.e. people from the same village etc. If they knew you're grandfather they probably know his family and how to get in touch with them.

Another place to start would be the clubs/family associations he belonged too. If he couldn't write Chinese, he might have had help from them or other friends to write letters for him and have addresses.

Good luck!
