As in the case of Ms. Corazon Aquino, I read that her first ancestor who came to the Philippines was Mr. Kho Hoang (Xu Huang in Mandarin?) from Tang-oa (Tong'an) County in Hokkian (Fujian), China. So Kho Hoang + ko (elder brother) was modified into Cojuangco and adapted as a surname by all of his descendants.
In your case, it seems that your ancestor's name was So Liong (Su Long in Mandarin?). With the suffix "ko" meaning "elder brother," it was then adapted as a new Filipino's surname several generations ago.

: Something is unclear about your message. Is your surname Soliongco your personal surname, or could it be your husband's surname? If it is the latter, then I can understand your remark about "my paternal grandmother's maiden surname was Soliongco". Which would lead me to believe your maiden surname is not Soliongco.
: Based on the little I know about ethnic Chinese "surnames" in the Philippines, it can be explained as follows: "So" is the real Chinese surname, and "Liong" was the given or personal name--there could be another one that was dropped for one reason or another. Lastly, the "Co" is a suffix to identify that it is of Chinese origin.
