Family LIEM, as far as I know, means 'FOREST' in English. In Chinese character you write it down with two tree characters.
My family came from the Chinese region of Fujian Province, and has been settled down in Indonesia [actually Java] from 1792 as a refugee from Mainland China, to seek refuge in the then known Dutch Territories in Central Java, away from the ruling Manchurian dynasty.
The spelling LIEM came from the Dutch spell, in Malaysia and other [formerly] British territories you spell it as LIM. But it has always the same meaning [= forest].
People coming from the Beijing Region [and also the official Mandarin pronounciation] is LIN. If you come from other region then this same name is spelled and pronounced as LAM and also LING.
If someone knows more about the Genealogy of this family Liem from Fujian Province; especially around the city of Xiamen [formerly known as Amoy] please contact me [mail me]! I am very interested to trace my genealogy back to the mainland China. CAN ANYBODY HELP ME?
