I'm a Yan too. Many of the Cantonese Yans come from Taishan (Toishan) in the Province of Kwantong. It's not far from Hong Kong. Actually the Yans descend from the Tong family (an ancestor changed it to Yan as he was fleeing the Mongolian invasion) who are descended from the last member of the Shang Dynasty royal family (everyone else was masacred by the incoming Zhou (Chou) Dynasty.
