Karen,

Your genealogical quest is a bit open-ended. Canton may have been the generic term used to identify today's Guangdong Province in China. The family name Ng is prevalent in multiple villages in Guangdong Province. There is a website that identifies villages where family names are prevalent. However, the website is limited to those villages in Toishan and Hoiping counties, which are areas from which many Chinese migrated. You may want to start with assessing all the Ng villages on the website http://www.c-c-c.org/villagedb/search.cgi by typing in "Ng". As you will see, there are 2 Chinese characters for "Ng", so you will need to know which one is your family name. By clicking on to the appropriate "Ng" character, you will see tons of "Ng" villages in Toishan and a few for Hoiping counties. Based on what information you have about your father grandfather, and with a stroke of luck, you may be able to pinpoint what village they were from - - surely official papers and old letters to and from China would have contained the names of the county, heung or village (likely in Chinese). If, by some miracle, you do discover what village they were from, then it is likely you will need to make a trip to the village to seek out your genealogical roots. Your village should have an "Ng" family clan book called a "jook Po" ("zupu" in Mandarin) which contains the genealogy of the "Ng" family name. However, prior to making a trip, you should seek out an "Ng" family or district association (if one exists) in New Zealand, Australia or Hong Kong to comb through whatever information it may have in your quest. You may even find the name of your grandfather and father among the information. Good luck.

Raymond
