I wrote just now saying "Guo" was the name of the fief of a younger brother of the 3rd king/emperor of the Chou dynasty, and that's the origin of name. I just checked. I remembered wrong.

It's actually the 3rd son of Chou Wen-wang(Ji Chang), the father of the first Chou king/emperor. So "Guo" was the name of the fief given a younger brother of the first Chou king/emperor, Chou Wu-wang(Ji Fa).

This is information is in the "Ci Hai" dictionary, and the dictionary cites the "Three Annals of the Spring & Autumn Period" and in the "Book of Mencius" as references for the entry.
