Known as "The Auld Mug" this coveted trophy was won for Australia, off the coast of Perth in Western Australia, by Alan Bond's 12m yacht racing team in 1983.
At that time, Alan Bond was the owner of the Swan Brewery, and had unsuccessfully tried for the Cup a couple of times previously - always an exciting time for West Australians (and all Aussies), who would sit up in the middle of the night watching the races on TV. The race was originally known as the One Hundred Guineas Cup, but was lost by the British in August 1851, and renamed and held by the Americans from that time onwards.

it was temporarily displayed for all to see at the W.A. Art Gallery. The
Cup was housed at the Royal Perth Yacht Club which was founded in part
by William Mumme.
