Mobile, Alabama Mumme Family

John George Mumme was born October 14, 1838 in Germany. He married Caroline Lahrsen from Holstein. He was a sailor, and moved to Buffalo, New York where their only child was born December 1863.

After the birth of his son, he moved to Manitowac, Wisconsin (on Lake Michigan - north of Chicago) where they appeared on the 1870 Manitowac Census. He was a schooner captain and either owned or was captain of the Henrietta Esch sailing ship berthed in Manitowac. (The family has found articles in the Manitowac newspaper about the launching of this ship.)

He moved his family south to New Orleans during the 1880''s, then to Pascagoula, Mississippi and then to Mobile, Alabama - all ports on the Gulf of Mexico.

Caroline Lahrsen Mumme died in October 1890. George married Rita Jacinto from Mexico on in 1893 in New Orleans. George and Rita had seven children. These included Rebecca, Georgina, Frederick, Henry, Dewey, Ray and Rita. Frederick died during World War I. Rebecca and Georgina married and moved with their husbands to Houston, Texas. (Georgina was Loretta Shannon's grandmother.) The other children stayed around Mobile, Alabama as well as the New Orleans and Lake Charles, Louisiana area - all seaports.

Family sources state that Captain George Mumme was from the Alsace Lorraine area of Germany. This is a province which has been shuffled between Germany and France for centuries. In the 1920 census, George stated that his father was French and spoke French. (France took over control of the province in 1919 following World War I.)

The family states that George had several brothers who were sailors. George had several ships, including one called the Three Brothers. He sailed from Puerto Rico to Mexico and from the Gulf Coast to Mexico and back again to Puerto Rico. One of his ships sank after leaving Puerto Rico. Some of the ships he either owned or captained included the Condor, Catha Miniver and Catamaran. There may have been another ship, the Three Brothers - named for his sailor brothers.

Christian & Johanna Mumme

Provided by Alma Bacon Orsett, England

I am researching the Mumme name.

I have our Christian and Johanna Mumme in England in 1871 aged 46 so therefore born ca 1825 place of birth Germany.

I have a feeling he had brothers Carl Whilhelm Ferdinand Mumme and John Mumme. Both anglicised their names. I also have another researcher who is interested in the Mumme family from Brunswick (Braunschweig.)

I wonder if you have any in formation on Christian and his early life as I would be thrilled to know their origins and to swop information

Many thanks,

Alma Bacon Orsett, England. [email protected]
