1877 Assistant Church Historian, Andrew Jenson (1850-1941), in the Encyclopedic History of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter -day Saints, Deseret News Publishing Company, Salt Lake City, Utah, 1941, p. 248, states: When the Sanpete Stake of Zion was organized July 4, 1877, the Fayette Branch was organized as a regular bishop's ward with John Bartholowmew [Bartholomew] as Bishop. He presided 37 years, or until 1914... [at the time of his death]. The following enlargement of the Fayette Ward [Utah] Historical Record, 1871-1950, FHL film # 0025955, indicates John's ordination as a high priest and setting apart as a bishop by Elder Erastus Snow, July 1877. (It can also be noted that he was ordained an elder in 1867 by his future father-in-law, John E. Metcalf, Presiding Elder of the Fayette Branch at the time.) John was sealed to his wife, Eliza Metcalf in 1868 (see previous documentation above), and served as Presiding Elder of the branch himself, from 1867 to 1877 (see previous documentation above), when it became a ward. Thus, he presided over the Fayette unit of the Church, a total of 47 consecutive years.
