Hugh Glover 1829 - 1899

Hugh Glover was born in Upholland, son of Ruth Glover in 1829. From an early age he was working on a farm, later becoming a coal miner. Hugh Glover married Mary Pye in 1852. In his 30's he also had living with him, his mother's children. Between 1871 and 1881 he was disabled, which was probably due to a mining accident. Hugh Glover died in 1899, aged 70.

It is the 1851 Census that reveals a few more facts. In 1851 Hugh Glover is living at 1 James Street, Eccleston, St. Helens and is the eldest son of Ruth Bibby.

In 1851 Hugh Glover is a brickmaker aged 21 living with Ruth Bibby (46), his mother, a widow, from Dalton.

Children in the house were also Michael Bibby (18), Jessie (male) (15), Ann (8), and William (6).

This would appear to show that Ruth married a Bibby at or before 1833 and that her husband died.

Also in the house at this time are 2 lodgers, William Owen (41) and surprisingly a Thomas Glover (22), born in Skelmerdale (a relative?).

Eccleston is a small village near St. Helens.

Also present in the same house at this time were the following nephews and neices...William Bibby (16), George Webster (10), Henry Webster (14), Mary Ann Webster (7) and Robert Webster (18)..

The Webster children were the children of his sister, Mary Ann Glover, and her husband George Webster.

The Bibby child was the child of his mother, Ruth Glover from her marriage to Johnathan Bibby. In fact William Bibby was a half-brother, not a nephew.
