The father of Ruth Glover was Hugh Glover, who was at times a husbandman/farmer and labourer. Her mother was probably Mary.

Domestic conversation during her childhood would have been about the threats and activities of Napoleon and wars with the French. Only in 1815 was Napoleon finally defeated.

After the Napoleonic wars there was an economic slump with poor harvests also inflation caused widespread social unrest. The times must have indeed been hard.

Ruth Glover (aged 20) had an illegitimate child Mary Ann in 1824 while living in Rainford.

In 1829 (aged 25) her illegitimate son Hugh Glover was born.

Ruth Glover (28) married Johnathan Bibby 30 Jan, 1832, a weaver from Rainford. Her husband did not survive for the 1841 census.

John Phillips Kay, secretary to Manchester's Special Board of Health, described the weavers' plight in 1832: "The handloom weavers ... still continue a very extensive class, and though they labour 14 hours upwards daily, earn only from five to seven shillings a week.

1829/30 must have been very exciting as the Rainhill trials for the first successful locomotive were held.

Rainhill trials
Rocket was designed and built to compete in the Rainhill Trials, a competition to select the locomotive type for the Liverpool and Manchester Railway, on 6 to 14 October 1829. Of the five entrants, only three of them were seen as serious contenders. All of the other competitors broke down and Rocket was declared the winner. Rocket fulfilled the key requirement of the contest that a full simulated 50 mile (80km) round trip under load be completed with satisfactory fuel consumption. It averaged 12 miles per hour (19 km/h) while hauling 13 tons and 29 miles per hour (47 km/h) running light.
Opening-day accident
The opening ceremony of the L&MR, on 15 September 1830, was a considerable event, drawing luminaries from the government and industry, including the Prime Minister, the Duke of Wellington. The day started with a procession of eight trains setting out from Liverpool. The parade was led by Northumbrian driven by George Stephenson, and included Phoenix driven by his son Robert, North Star driven by his brother Robert Sr. and Rocket driven by assistant engineer Joseph Locke. The day was marred by the death of William Huskisson, the Member of Parliament for Liverpool, who was struck and killed by Rocket at Parkside.

At this time, England was changing. In 1837 Queen Victoria was crowned where new technologies such as steam ships, railroads, photography, and telegraphs would appear. But these new technologies would take a generation to develop.

The 1841 census has limited detail, but does show the same Ruth Bibby 35, living at Maypole Brow, Rainford, back working on the farm.

Present were Michael (8), and Jessie (5) from her marriage to Johnathan Bibby. Also present were Ann Glover (35), Margaret Glover (8) and Mary Glover (5), all born in Lancashire. The two adult females, Ruth Bibby and Ann Glover were both agricultural (farm) labourers. Her son, 11 year old Hugh Glover is not shown to be in the same household but was living at Hocks Farm, Rainford.

It seems that the Ann Glover and Ruth Glover were related and likely that they were at least cousins, or more likely..sisters.

Ann Glovers children were illegitimate as shown by the All Saints, Rainford baptism records. Curiously, they were all baptised within one week...

Not immediate family but most certainly a relative.

Summary

Hugh Glover (b. abt. 1785) had a daughter Ruth (mother probably Mary) in 1804.

Her known children include Mary Ann Glover who was born 1824, and Hugh Glover born 1929. Ruth Glover worked as farm labour in the Rainford area and married Johnathan Bibby, a handloom weaver, in 1832, having more children but was widowed by 1841. The times were most certainly hard and living frugal.

By 1851 Ruth was living with her children by Johnathan Bibby, son Hugh Glover and lodger William Owen.

From the information above I summise that Ruth Glover had a very hard life, was hard working and was a natural survivor, doing whatever was needed to be done to keep her family together. Most certainly she would have been a 'character' of note.

Ruth Bibby (Glover) died in 1858, the death registered in the district of Prescot.

In times of hardship, families closed ranks and helped each other, as was seen in the 1841 census when Ruth Glover and Ann Glover shared a dwelling with both their children. A similar thing happened later, when, after the death of Ruth Glover, in the 1861 census, Hugh Glover had Ruth's children living with him, although there they were described as nephew and neices.
