Christopher Whitmore Family Tree and Genealogy
Summary
Born about 1745 William Glover married Ruth Sephton in Rainford, Lancashire in 1773. He was a husbandman (farmer). Their children include Hugh Glover (b.1773).
Hugh Glover (wife Mary) had a daughter Ruth, who was baptised in 1804. Her illegitimate son, Hugh Glover, was born 1829 in Upholland.
His mother Ruth Glover later married Johnathan Bibby.
In 1841 Hugh Glover, aged about 10, was living at Hocks Farm, Rainford, his mother also in Rainford at Maypole Brow. Over several censuses, he had relatives of his family living with him which would indicate how closely knitted the family was in times of need.
It was whilst he was living with his mother in Eccleston, St. Helens that Hugh Glover married Mary Pye in 1852.
In 1866 Thomas was born who married Amelia
Maria Lomas in 1886. By 1891 they had moved from Prescot/Rainford
to Westhoughton.
Thomas was born there in 1898 who married my grandmother
Mary Jane Lowe in 1919 in Coppull after WWI.
****
The early Glovers were farmers and farm labourers, wages and standards of living were low, finding work where it was available and regularly having to move between Rainford, Upholland and Skelmerdale. In times of need, relatives shared the same accomodation.
It was the mid 19th century that they became coal miners. Thomas Glover (b. 1866) later moved towards Wigan and its local coalfields, his son also called Thomas finally residing in Standish / Coppull and married Mary Jane Lowe.

A modern map showing the closeness of Rainford, Skelmersdale and Upholland, which in those days were just fields away. Some of the old footpaths and tracks still survive today. |
Dalton
The rural parish of Dalton lies to the north of Up Holland
and east of Ormskirk. The landscape is dominated by Ashurst
Hill, 570 feet above sea level, which is crowned by a beacon
tower re-erected in 1768 by Lord Skelmersdale when a French
invasion was regarded as imminent. Watches were stationed
at the beacon day and night to light the fire if the enemy
landed. It is well probable then that some of the watches
between 1768 and 1814 were done by the Glover family of
my ancestors.
From the Beacon and the surrounding fields there are extensive
views across the West Lancashire plain and, on a clear day,
the mountains of Wales and the Lake District can be seen.
In the 2001 census Dalton has a population of 348.
