Reuben Lomas 1839 - 1898
The father of Reuben was William Lomas who married
Fanny Reeves in Wellington in 1833. At the
age of 11 Reuben was already a pit boy, who lived and probably
worked with his grandfather Thomas at Lawley Bank. In 1865
whilst still living in Lawley Bank, Reuben married Ann Vaughan
in Wellington. By 1869 the couple had moved to Rainford,
Lancashire (made possible by the
expansion of the railway system in the 1850's) and
by 1881 Ann's mother, by then a widow had joined them. They
moved once again to Wigan where Reuben died in 1898 and
his wife Ann is shown in the 1901 census still living in
Bottling Wood, aged 57, close to daughter Caroline.

The 1841 census is a little confusing as no relationships are given and the adult ages are rounded down to the nearest 5 years.
Living in 1 household were Fanny Lomas 30 (b. abt. 1811), William Lomas 25 (b. abt 1816), Noah 8 (b. 1833), Mary 6 (b.1835), Sarah 4 (b abt 1837) , Reuben 2 (b.1839), and Henry 6 months (b.1841).
Noah and Mary are seen in the 1851 census as children of Thomas and Sarah Lomas, Rueben Lomas' grandfather.
In the 1851 census Reuben Lomas was 11 years old and was living at Lawley Bank, with his brother Henry 9, and his grandparents, Thomas Lomas 66 (b. 1785), a miner from Little Wenlock, Shropshire and Sarah (wife) 56 (b 1795), from Salop, together with their children Noah 17, and Mary 15.
Whatever happened for certain to William and Fanny is unknown at this time. |
