I can remember Mary Jane (nana) while living at 1 Malvern Street, Standish (c.1960) doing her washing outside with a 'dolly tub', scrubbing board and cast iron mangle, (that was somehow painted the same colour as colliery green) and of course the favourite starch of the day, Dolly Blue.

In the mid sixties Mary Jane and Thomas Winstanley moved to 'the prefabs' in James Square, Standish. These were prefabricated bungalows put up after the second World War to initially provide cheap and temporary housing. Infact they were very cosy, quite popular and lasted long after the war.

Mary Jane died in the 'prefab' in Standish in 1968.

    Footnote

After the death of Mary Jane, Thomas Winstanley moved into one of a row of houses known locally as 'Ghost Row' which fronted without gardens onto Preston Road. He died shortly afterwards.
