Christopher Whitmore Family Tree and Genealogy

The Lowe Family

John Hughes from Wolverhampton, born abt.1819 moved to the Wigan area, marrying Rachel Knight in Wigan, September 1837. The 1861 census shows the Hughes family living in Warrington Road, Ince.

It was one of the daughters, Hannah, that married into the Lowe family.

William Lowe was born in Wigan abt. 1844 and married Hannah Hughes in 1863.

Hannah Hughes was from Astley. During their marriage, the family were based in the Tyldesley area of Wigan, going to Burnley for the birth of Absalom in 1874. Within 2 years they were back in Tyldesley for the birth of Mary Lowe in 1876.

In 1876/7 the family moved to Ashton under Lyne. William Lowe died in 1877 following a mining explosion at Limehurst colliery.

In 1889, Hannah remarried to Thomas Yates, and was in 1891 living at 193 Oldham Road, Ashton under Lyne with children Rachael, Absalom and Mary. Her married son Henry was living at 190 Oldham Road.

It was in Ashton under Lyne that Absalom Lowe married Sarah Ann Jones in 1894.

By 1901 Henry, Absalom and families were living in Higher Ince, working at the local collieries (probably Ince Hall or Kirkless Hall collieries).

By the 1920's both families were living in Coppull. Absalom, in Bogburn Lane, where he helped to bring up his grandchild Amelia, daughter of Mary Jane Lowe. Henry Lowe was manager of Chisnal Hall colliery and retired in 1932.

Absalom Lowe and Sarah Ann had four children that I can document, one of whom was my grandmother Mary Jane Lowe.

Mary Jane Lowe married Thomas Glover in 1919 in Coppull. Their children include Edna Glover, my mother, who married Gerard Whitmore in 1952. After the death of Thomas Glover in 1937, Mary Jane Lowe married Thomas Winstanley in 1941. Mary Jane Lowe died in Standish in 1968.
