Obituary, John Burton Chute

The Register, Thursday, October 31, 1907, Obituary, J. B. CHUTE.

"Mr. John Burton Chute, the well known grocer, of Berwick, passed away on Tuesday after a brief illness. During his whole life Mr. Chute has been actively connected with the business life of Berwick and his name has appeared in the partnership list of several firms doing business here. Some ten years ago he built a store near his residence, where his business has since been carried on.

Mr. Chute was a man of quiet, retiring disposition. For many years his health has not been good and he has not taken the place in public life for which, under other conditions, he was eminently qualified. This was matter of regret to those who best knew him and could appreciate the excellence of his judgement.

Mr. Chute leaves a widow, formerly Miss Lucy Illsley, and two children, Miss Flora and Master Hollis; the survivors of a family of seven. Of these three died in infancy, during the winter of 1877-78; Miss Unie died in 1901, and Georgie in May, 1906."

He was a sober, industrious man, kind and neighborly to all; died June 11, 1833; then the family moved into or near Aylesford, on the "Post Road", and the widow married 2nd, James Parker, July 1, 1847; he died September 11, 1848, aged seventy-nine, six months; she died Apr. 5, 1876, aged eighty-eight"

*Note: The text regarding Mary Roach's pedigree reads "Mary Roach3 (Matthew Patrick)", so it is unclear as to whether it should have read Mary Roach2 (Matthew Patrick), or whether Matthew and Patrick were two separate individuals. I have chosen to separate them, but this is not necessarily accurate.

Note: The names of the children of Donald Turner Chute and Kathleen Rockliffe Chute were drawn from his obituary. It is possible that some of the individuals listed as his children may instead be the spouses of children. Confirmation of this family record is needed.

Note    N95-1941         Back to Index        Back to Peter Chute of Campbeltown, County Argyll, Scotand.

Notes on Peter Chute of Campbeltown, County Argyll, Scotand:

Two local 2010 news articles mention Peter Chute. The first, "St. Mungo Music" is actually situated in the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Glasgow and also mentions a young daughter, "Sally" whose birth name may have been "Sarah", but that requires confirmation. However, the URL of the article identifies the event as part of an "Argyll Isles Pastoral Music Weekend". The second article mentions a Peter Chute who organized a visit to the Owl Sanctuary in Campbeltown and appears to have been part of an event organized by Campbeltown residents. One possibility, although rather unlikely, is that these are two different Peter Chute's. My hunch is that these are the same individual, participated with his daughter in a cultural event in Glasgow but residing in Campbeltown. It is also possible that his permanent residence is in fact in Glasgow. More details on this family is needed.

St Mungo Music
Liturgical Music in the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Glasgow

"During the preparation of the gifts, we had a beautiful instrumental on guitar by Peter Chute and his young daughter, Sally on baritone. The Sanctus and acclamation were from a setting by Liam Lawton and the new McMillan setting of the Agnus Dei. During Communion, we sang "Take and Eat" and gave the men the opportunity of going solo on the verses. The Mass finished with the Ninian hymn. Then it was a quick cuppa and scones/biscuits before we took leave of each other until the next time!"

"Activities In Argyll, thanks go to the Mid Argyll Pipe Band, Ford Fun Day organisers, the Mid Argyll Youth Project, Includem, and especially to members of the Dalriada Junior Gaelic Choir and Inveraray Pipe Band for helping us to organise a wide range of activities, workshops and cultural exchanges. Thanks also to Ormsary Estate for arranging a farm and fish farm visit; the Clyde Fishermen's Association at Tarbert for the visit to the fish processing plant. Dave Bageley of the Mid Argyll Youth Project invested much time not only in arranging a shared jam session but in recording parts of the visit for the proposed CD. Head teachers and students at Oban High, Tarbert Academy and Lochgilphead Joint Campus also became involved. Peter Chute arranged the visit to the Owl Sanctuary in Campbeltown and with Fr Mushtaq Azad, the ceilidh/pot-luck supper in Campbeltown."

Notes on George Edward Chute and Betty Lindstrom Chute:

Correspondence, Betty Lindstrom Chute to George M. Chute, Jr.

Feb. 6, 1962

Dear Mr. Chute,

It seems very strange for me to write to a Mr. George Chute and know that he's a stranger to me. I promised my husband's uncle, Dick Chute1 that I would write you shortly after the holidays. Here it is February & I am just getting to it. Dick received several Christmas cards from people who didn't know of Maud's death and he's asked me to write to them and enclose the obituary he had typed up. About a year ago Maud had surgery for an inoperable tumor. She thought she had gall bladder surgery and we never told her differently. As far as we know she died not knowing she had cancer. She was home most of the time but went to the hospital when she was most uncomfortable. She died in the hospital June 25th. Her death and illness was very hard on Dick and adjusting his life without her has been hard, too. But I think he's doing remarkably well. I went to see him the other day and he looks better than he's looked in months. He does his own cooking and housekeeping. Even takes his laundry to the laundromat. He drives but doesn't take his car out of the garage when the snow is on the ground. He has wonderful neighbors who check on him every day. He's very much a sports enthusiast and television is helping him pass the time. And now that spring is on the way, I think he has the lion's share of the battle won. He'll be 83 his next birthday.

My husband, George, is his only family now. George's mother is in Elroy operating the hotel and George drives a semi-truck between Marston & Chicago 3 times a week. We have three children - Steve - 16 - is a junior in high school. John - 13 - is in 7th grade and we have little Jean who will be 4 in April. Needless to say, she's the apple of our eye.

If you have a spare moment, I'm sure Dick would enjoy hearing from you.

Sincerely,

Betty Chute

1Her use of the name "Dick Chute" is somewhat confusing. She is probably refering to Maud's brother Alfred Hervey Chute, or a companion as yet unidentified.

Notes on John Walker Scammell and Emma Gertrude Sancton Scammell:

Sources: Not all your information for 4053-3 and 4053-4 are correct or complete. 4053-3 are my 3rd great grandparents (Joseph Scammell and Fanny Matilda nee Chute Walker Scammell). Their son (4053-4) and his wife are the initial problem. His name was John Walter Scammell Known in St. John, NB, Canada and New York papers as J. Walter Scammell, Esq. My father was John Walter (III) and my grandfather John Walter (II). So, I'm confidant of my facts. I also have a 2" scrapbook kept by Walter's daughters of all news articles pertaining to him. He is almost invariably referred to as J. Walter Scammell, Esq. of Scammell Bros.

The other error (in my view) is his wife's middle name. Emma Sancton. My great aunt (her grand daughter) gave me her name as Emma Gertrude Sancton. I think the use of "Gilbert" is a mis-translation somewhere. None of the Sanctons, Allens or Traphagers have a Gilbert associated with them and it's more likely a surname than given name. In addition, she and Walter named their daughter, Maude Gertrude Scammell.
