Author: John Coleman
Publisher: James Pott & Co., New York; Hutchinson & Co., London
Date: Published in two volumes, 1904
This Source Has Been Cited for: the family of James Henry Chute and John
Chute.
Text: "After a long and fatiguing journey, not in a tub, but still very "tubby," I arrived in Bath at two
or three in the morning. John Chute awaited my arrival, and took me home to his diggin's, where a supper
was prepared. He plied me with hot potations, over which I fell asleep, and had to be packed off to bed. Next day he
introduced me to his brother, then manager of the historic Assembly Rooms over which Beau Nash had formerly
presided. James Chute was a great strapping, handsome fellow in those days, brusque, but frank and engaging. He was married
to the daughter of my new manageress, Mrs. Macready, widow of the great Mac's father, and an eccentric old lady, whose
origin was shrouded in mystery."

Title: "The Dixwell Papers"
Author/Editor: Franklin B. Dexter, M.A.
Publisher: Papers of the New Haven Colony Historical Society. Printed for the
Society by Tuttle, Morehouse & Taylor Company, New Haven, CT.
Volume: VI
Pages: 337-374
Date: 1900
Comments: "The following papers were presented to this Society in February, 1889, by Epes S. Dixwell,
Esq., of Cambridge, Mass., whose grandmother was a granddaughter of Colonel John Dixwell. At the request of this Society
the donor subsequently prepared a statement concerning his gift, from which the following is an extract. "Two hundred years
ago an old man of eighty-two years was lying ill in your town of a painful disease which brought his death on the 18th of
March, 1689. He left a widow and three small children, two daughters and a son. The oldest daughter was ten years old, the
son eight, and the youngest six. He had here lived by the name of James Davids, for about a quarter of a century, respected
for his quiet, secluded and pious life, known only to a few of the prominent citizens, observed for a distinguished bearing
which betokened an acquaintance with the world and with polished life beyond the manners of most of the people then in New
Haven. In particular he was known to Rev. James Pierpont and to Gov*. James Bishop and Gov. William Jones. To them he had
confided the secret of his true name, John Dixwell, and that he had been one of those who had affixed his signature and
seal to the death warrant of Charles I."
Relation: John Dixwell's niece was Elizabeth Dixwell Chute Westrowe, wife
of Edward Chute of Bethersden.

and funerals, but they never brought their wives or children! Probably because they were all cops they were overly
protective."

Comments [Jackie]: When Ancestry.com upgraded their website, one of the consequences was that a database
such as this one, with authors, sources and Notes clearly visible in the prior version, ended up as "Unknown" in all
categories, and next to useless for our confirmation purposes. Typically, I try to avoid citing them, but in this case
the unknown researcher clearly did a great deal of research on the Jones and Bougourd sides of this family. Among the
Notes that did make it through the site upgrade were, regarding Bertha's father William Dance Jones, "Ran a Jewelry Shop
[at] 4 and 6 Smith Street, Guernsey. [The family] left for US in 1907." None of this is confirmed without further
research, but the detail was impressive enough to include this as a source. If anyone knows who created the original
database and did all of the research, let me know: I'd like to give them due credit for it.

Carrier: SS USAT Edmund B Alexander
Port of Arrival: Port of New York
Date: 28 JUNE 1946
Passenger1: Philomena Chute, aged 22, White, Application #39929
Passenger2: Mary Chute, aged 4, White, Application #39929
Port of Departure: Strangely enough, the Port of Departure was not listed on the Passenger Record.
However, the Ship's History includes the following: "After the war in early 1946 she was refitted to carry "war brides",
with accommodation for 903 adults and 314 children. From 1946 to 1949, EDMUND B. ALEXANDER made many voyages carrying women
and children from Southampton to New York." Philomena may have traveled to Southampton to board the ship or there may
have been another stop along the outbound voyage. The Ship's name had changed throughout her history from "Amerika" in
1905, to "America" in 1917 to "Edmund B Alexander" in 1941. Another little snippet of historical interest that has nothing
to do with Philomena, Mary or any other Chutes: "At 11:45 AM on the morning of April 14, 1912, SS AMERIKA's Captain Knuth
(formerly Captain of PENNSYLVANIA) ordered a message transmitted:
Hydrographic Office Washington D.C.
amerika passed two large icebergs in 4127 N. 50 8' W on the 14th of April
Knuth
It appears that this message was never relayed to the bridge of SS TITANIC as it sailed towards those coordinates." So it
also appears that Philomena and Mary were sailing on a rather famous ship.
